Reality
of Sihr
Sihr is variously known as “magic”,
“sorcery”, “witchcraft”, or “enchantment”. It is absolutely forbidden in Islam.
Anyone who practices Sihr (black magic) is guilty of Shirk (polytheism)
and Kufr (unbelief).
But like the
false gods worshiped by the idolaters, Sihr is only imaginary, not real.
It is the art of deception and illusion. Sihr cannot effect anyone, least of
all the Prophets of God. It is not possible to kill anyone or cause anyone to
become sick through Sihr. The Holy Qur’an states that the sorcerers or
magicians are unable to harm anyone without Allah’s permission (Sura 2: 102)
The story of a Jewish sorcerer, Lubaid b. al-‘Asim, or a Jewish woman
casting a magic spell on our Prophet (peace be upon him) is false and
fabricated, as it clearly contravenes the verdict of the Holy Qur’an, which
states that it is only the disbelieving, wicked evildoers who allege that the
Prophet was bewitched (Sura 17: 47; 26: 185)
