Contempory Religious Authority in the World of Islam

The following are several spheres that wield living religious leadership and authority among the Muslims;

1. State-controlled institutions like al-Azhar University

2. Independent institutions and schools of Ulema such as Deoband

3. Intellectuals and Western-educated professionals (Tariq Ramadan)

4. Televangelists and popular preachers on social media (Dr. Zakir Naik, Amr Khaled)

5. Sectarian Ulema (Twelver Shi’ite clergy based in Najaf and Qom; the Salafi scholarly community based in Medina)

6. Sufi mashayikh and spiritual guides

7. Organized groups particularly political ones (Muslim Brotherhood; the various Jama’aat)

I believe that, for the most part, all of these various spheres which have assumed the religious leadership and authority in the Muslim world are essentially corrupt or at the very least problematic, some more than others. The substance of the Islamic doctrine of ‘Finality of Prophethood’ is, in the words of ‘Allama’ Iqbal: “No spiritual surrender to any human being after Muhammad.”
The Prophet Muhammad was the final person sent as being deputized and authorized by God to speak on His behalf. While ‘prophet-like’ figures may come after him, such as the Messiah, Mahdi, Mujaddids, etc., none of them possess the authority to overrule the delegated divine authority of Prophet Muhammad , but are in fact subject to it, and their function is only to reaffirm that divine authority. Therefore, when I speak of the contemporary spheres of leadership and authority, I mean authority in the sense of interpreting the teachings of Islam. Some sects are bordering on rebellion against this fundamental doctrine of Finality of Prophethood, such as the Twelver Shi’a and certain extreme Sufis, who have relegated their Imams and Shaikhs to a position rivaling that of the Last and Final Prophet .

But the question of who should wield the position of greatest influence, living religious leadership of the community and authority to interpret and impart the teachings of Islam is a very critical one. At the most basic level, the Sunni tradition holds that the line of rightly-guided Caliphs who succeeded the Prophet after his death only wielded administrative and political authority, that is, in the realm of the executive and the judiciary in terms of running the affairs of the Muslim community. The Caliphs do not possess any religious authority to speak on behalf of Allah Most High, nor is their interpretation and understanding of the Religion necessarily authoritative in the sense of being the final word or unquestionable. The Salafi trend, however, emphasizes the collective authority of the Salaf, particularly the Prophet’s Companions (Allah be pleased with them) in terms of understanding and interpreting the teachings of Islam. In modern times, the Salafi trend tends to emphasize the authority of the Ulema of their sect, again collectively and not individually, in interpreting the teachings of Islam. Academic based quietist Salafism is therefore very much attached to a group of Ulema who are based in the Arab Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Gulf countries, Jordan and Yemen in particular).

The Imamiya Shi’a, as pointed to earlier, regard their 12 Imams as infallible guides and authorized to speak on behalf of Allah like Prophets, and have the final word to interpret the teachings of Islam based on their delegated divine authority. But what about the question of legislative authority? The standard Islamic belief is that the Prophet Muhammad was the final person to be delegated with authority to legislate and formulate the laws until Judgment Day. Hence, his Shari’a is final and perfect, not a jot of it can be abrogated or amended. But the Imamiya Shi’a have not plainly denied that their Imams have authority to legislate in the Religion. They in fact affirm that the Imams are delegated with both Takwini and Tashri’i (legislative) authority. Orthodox Islam, however, teaches that only the Angels are delegated with Takwini power and only Prophets can be delegated with Tashri’i (legislative) authority in the Religion.

Some extreme Sufis hold that their Shaikhs and Awliya possess Takwini and Tashri’i authority, though in the latter (Tashri’i) if they do not assent to that doctrine formally, at least practically based on their unquestionable blind obedience to their Shaikh or Murshid. Similarly, those Muqallideen who take their Taqlid to the extreme of obeying the Mujtahid and the Madhhab in a matter that plainly and unquestionably contravenes the Nass of the Quraan and Sunna.
Take the example of a heretical “Sufi” who does not hold that Salat is obligatory upon him anymore because supposedly he has reached a position of enlightenment that he is no longer bound by the Shari’a, or the modernist Sudanese thinker Mahmoud Taha who declared that all of the injunctions of the Medinese Verses of the Holy Qur’an were no longer applicable in this age. Such an approach to Islam is undoubtedly a repudiation of the substance contained within the idea of Finality of Prophethood, which Iqbal defined as: “No spiritual surrender to any human being after Muhammad.”

The Sunna and Hadith-rejecting groups such as the so-called ‘Ahl-al-Quraan’ or ‘Quraaniyyun’, in theory hold that the Revelation to the Prophet Muhammad is final and authoritative, and there can be no other delegated legislative authority in the Religion after it, but their problem is that they dispute with the Muslim mainstream as to what constitutes the divine Revelation in the first place, as they reject the Sunna and Hadith as sources of divine inspiration and therefore a source of divine legislation from Allah through the agency of His final Prophet .

In practical terms, many States in the Muslim world have also contravened the essence of Finality of Prophethood by legislating laws that are plainly contrary to the Shari’a of Prophet Muhammad , for example by declaring Khamr (hard drink and intoxicants) as Halal when it is in fact Haram, or by forbidding something Allah has made Halal, such as polygamy, etc. If the Constitution of such States proclaims that it is secular, that sovereignty rests with the people (and not Allah), or that Religion has no place in the affairs of the State, then understand that such a State has formally rejected the core Islamic doctrine of Finality of Prophethood: “No spiritual surrender to any human being after Muhammad”.

Coming back to those spheres of influence and living religious leadership which do not ascribe to themselves delegated legislative authority in the Religion, their corruption or shortcomings are in other matters. Much of the contemporary Ulema can be said to be afflicted with the tendency of making Religion a means of profit and personal earning. It is not necessarily due to personal and character flaws in the Ulema as individuals but rather an institutional shortcoming. Likewise, spiritual guides and leaders, such as many Sufi mashayikh, are making their religious activities and personality cults they have constructed around themselves, as well as their control over shrines as a means of profit and earning. This is the corruption of the traditional religious leadership in the contemporary Muslim world. In countries where the Ulema are employees of the State, the situation is arguably worse as their sincerity and objectivity is easily compromised. This is especially true of al-Azhar University, about which it is erroneously but often stated that it is the highest authority in the Sunni world. State-controlled Ulema issue Fatawa and teach an approach to Islam which is favorable to the interests of the State or the ruling class, without regard to whether such Fatawa are in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

As for the organized groups (Jama’aat) such as the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates, a fundamental flaw with such groups is that leadership within that group is often times not based on level of piety or knowledge, but rather by amount of service to the cause of the group, especially financial service. So for example, if an extremely pious and knowledgable Muslim decided to join the organization one day, he would not be given a position of leadership over someone who is not known for piety and is ignorant, but who has a long history of service and involvement in the organization. In such groups, piety becomes defined more by service and involvement in the group. Of course, service is an act of piety in it of itself, but the mentality results in a kind of factionalism or Hizbiya, where the cause of the group becomes synonymous with the cause of Islam absolutely, leading to a very narrow practice of Islam at best (provided the cause of the group is Islamic in the first place). Registered members of the group have favorable treatment compared to those Muslims who are outside the group. Like the corruption of the Ulema and contemporary spiritual leaders, the salaried leadership of such groups are often times getting their bread and butter from their position, hence here too Religion becomes a means for profit and earning. Another problem with these Jamaa’at is they tend to gain control over the Mosque, and once they do so, actively seek to stifle out or not tolerate other voices, especially those which are critical of them. All manner of religious activity, so long as basic Islamic guidelines are observed within the reasonable confines and worshipers are not disturbed, has to be allowed in the Mosque and no administration or group has the right to prevent that. For example, if some Muslims, independent of the administration or group which is maintaining the Mosque, decide to have a study circle in the Mosque, they cannot be prevented from their religious activities by anyone.

Mentioning the story of the Prophet-Priest Zechariah, Allah quotes him as saying:

وَإِنِّي خِفْتُ الْمَوَالِيَ مِن وَرَائِي وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتِي عَاقِرًا فَهَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا ۝ يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنْ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَاجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا

And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir, who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing."

(Sura 19: 5-6)

In his explanation of this passage, Ibn Kathir writes in his Tafsir: “The reason for his fear was that he was afraid that the generation that would succeed him would be a wicked generation. Thus, he asked Allah for a son who would be a Prophet after him, who would guide them with his prophethood and that which was revealed to him. In response to this I would like to point out that he was not afraid of them inheriting his wealth. For a Prophet is too great in status, and too lofty in esteem to become remorseful over his wealth in this fashion. A Prophet would not disdain to leave his wealth to his successive relatives, and thus ask to have a son who would receive his inheritance instead of them. This is one angle of argument. The second argument is that Allah did not mention that he (Zakariyya) was wealthy. On the contrary, he was a carpenter who ate from the earnings of his own hand. This type of person usually does not have a mass of wealth. Amassing wealth is not something normal for Prophets, for verily, they are the most abstentious in matters of this worldly life.”

In other words, the Prophet and Priest of the Aaronide order, Zechariah (peace be upon him) supplicated to Allah to grant him a successor for the religious leadership of the community. He knew that the other contemporary religious leaders were corrupt and that anyone from among them who would inherit authority after him could potentially misguide the community. This is why, as the exegetes explain, Zechariah prayed that Allah raise up another Prophet after him to lead the community. Now a Prophet is not necessarily someone who is delegated with legislative authority in the Religion. In fact, most Prophets were not bringers of a divine Law, but instead acted upon the Shari’a of a previous Prophet. Most of the Israelite Prophets, for example, either followed the Laws of Abraham, or after Moses, the Mosaic Law, despite the fact that there were thousands of such Prophets. Neither Zechariah, nor the Prophet he had in mind as succeeding him, would be a prophet delegated with legislative authority, but would nevertheless guide the community upon the truth and be an example of legitimate and pure living religious leadership.

Therefore, for the contemporary Umma, it needs to pray for and seek out a “Prophet-like” figure who is in communion with Allah, i.e., a Saahib-al-Ilhaam and if such a leader emerges, by the Grace of Allah, the Umma should recognize him and look to him for contemporary leadership and guidance, even if he is opposed by the powerful spheres of influence on the religious scene such as the Ulema, the States, the political Jama’aat, or Western-educated “intellectuals”.

"Tonight My Lord has Killed Your Lord"

In the third part of this series on the fateful and destructive end of the Prophet Muhammad’s most implacable enemies, I will now discuss the story of the Sasanian Iranian emperor, Chosroes II, known by his title ‘Parvez’. The Prophet sent an epistle to him, inviting him to Islam and to accept him as God’s Prophet, otherwise the misdeeds of the Magians would be upon him for refusing. However, Chosroes arrogantly tore up the letter, saying “He writes this to me while he is my subject!” When the Prophet was informed about how Chosroes has torn his letter in two, the Prophet predicted “Likewise, his kingdom shall be torn up”.
Chosroes was so incensed by this letter, that he in fact sent instructions to his viceroy in Yemen, Bādhān, to have the Prophet arrested and brought to him in Iran. Two envoys were then sent to find the Prophet in Medina and inform him that he had to return with them, otherwise “he will destroy you, destroy your people, and lay waste to your lands”. When the Prophet saw these two Iranian envoys, he was disgusted by their custom of shaving their beards while keeping unnecessarily large mustaches and so refused to look at them while speaking to them. The Prophet told them to return to him tomorrow when he would inform them of his decision. That night the Prophet received a revelation from Allah, so when the two envoys returned to him the next day, he said:
أَنَّ رَبِّي قَدْ قَتَلَ رَبَّهُ كِسْرَى فِي هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ
“Tonight my Lord has killed your lord”

Dumbfounded, the two envoys returned to Yemen and informed Bādhān about their encounter with the Prophet Muhammad .

Meanwhile, the same night the Prophet had received his revelation, Chosroes son, Shīrūya, known as Kavadh II, had murdered his father and seized the throne for himself. The new emperor immediately sent a letter to Bādhān informing him about the state of affairs and nullifying his father’s orders to arrest the Prophet . Bādhān was then compelled to accept Islam, saying “Surely this man [Muhammad] is a Prophet”. (Tarikh al-Tabari)

Supplication against Abu Lahab's Son "O Allah Send One of Your Dogs Against Him"

In the previous entry I talked about the destruction of two of the Prophet’s implacable adversaries, Amir b. Tufail and Arbad b. Qays who suddenly died of plague and a lightning strike respectively. In the case of Amir, an Angel was sent by Allah who hit Amir’s knees with his wings knocking him into the dust. Two massive ulcers then grew on Amir’s knees resembling that of a camel’s, and this deadly afflicted cost him his life immediately thereafter while he was seeking refuge in the house of a woman of Bani Salul.
Another one of the Prophet’s worst enemies was the son of the wretched Abu Lahab, namely, Lahab or Utayba b. Abi Lahab, who used to abuse and ridicule the beloved Prophet . Therefore, the Prophet invoked a prayer against him, saying:

اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّطْ عَلَيْهِ كَلْبَكَ
“O Allah; send against him a dog of Yours”

When Utayba, while setting out on a journey to the Levant, learnt of the Prophet’s special prayer against him, he became extremely fearful. However, his companions reassured him. They told him that at night they would surround him, and that they would place him at the top of their piled up luggage so that no one would be able to reach him without first going through them. But when night fell, a ferocious lion appeared out of the wilderness, pounced over everyone and went straight for Utayba, taking him away and devouring him. (Mustadrak al-Hakim) Thus the supplication of the Prophet was amazingly and literally fulfilled, and is yet another mighty sign of him being a true Prophet of God.

Destruction of the Prophet's ﷺ Enemies by Lightning and Disease

The cursed and wretched end of the adversaries of a claimant to prophecy is a proof that the claimant is a true prophet. In this brief entry I shall mention the destructive end of two severe adversaries of the Prophet Muhammad who in fact conspired to assassinate him. They were Amir b. al-Tufail and Arbad b. Qays. These two individuals came to the Prophet in Medina. Amir addressed the Prophet , saying: “Either put me in charge of the desert and you maintain control over the towns or make me your successor; otherwise I shall attack you with two thousand (horsemen) of the people of Ghatafan” (Bukhari sharif). The Prophet naturally refused the arrogant demands of Amir b. al-Tufail. When Amir specifically asked to be made the Prophet’s successor, he replied:

لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ لَكَ وَلا لِقَوْمِكَ ، وَلَكِنْ لَكَ أَعِنَّةُ الْخَيْلِ

“That is not for you nor for your people; However, I could appoint you as a commander of the horsemen.”

(Tabarani sharif)

Amir arrogantly responded that he was already the commander of the cavalry and then proceeded to ask that he be given authority over the desert (Najd) while the Prophet would maintain his authority over the towns only, but this too the Prophet obviously refused him. Infuriated, Amir and his companion, Arbad b. Qays, then made a plot to assassinate the beloved Prophet .

When Amir and Arbad left, Amir said: “O Arbad! I will keep Muhammad busy while talking to him, so you can strike him with the sword.” Arbad said: “I will do that” and they went back to the Prophet . Amir said, “O Muhammad! Stand next to me so that I can talk to you.” The Prophet stood up, and they both stood next to a wall talking to each other. Thus while Amir was distracting the Prophet , Arbad reached for his sword. However, Arbad’s hand was miraculously paralyzed and he could not unsheath his sword. When the Prophet realized what was going on he immediately departed. Thus Ibn Abbas commented that the Angels in succession guard Prophet Muhammad by the command of Allah. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

The Prophet invoked Allah against against these two (Sealed Nectar p. 454)

Arbad b. Qays met his end in accordance with the Ayah of the Qur’an:

وَيُرْسِلُ الصَّوَاعِقَ فَيُصِيبُ بِهَا مَن يَشَاءُ وَهُمْ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي اللَّـهِ وَهُوَ شَدِيدُ الْمِحَالِ

He sends the lightning bolts, and therewith He strikes whom He wills while they are disputing about Allah. And He is Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment.

(Sura 13: 13)

Thus when Arbad reached a place called al-Raqm he was struck by a flash of lightning and was totally burnt to death along with his camel upon which he was mounted. Amir managed to flee to an area called al-Harīm but was afflicted with some deadly epidemic. He died while in the house of a lady of Bani Salul lamenting his miserable state all along. Deen-al-Haqq Prevailing over all other Deen (Sura 9:33)

One of the proof-texts presented by those affected by the Mawdudian thought is:

۝هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ۝

It is He Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.
(Sura 9: 33)
According to Mawdudian thought, Islam is a Dīn and not Madhhab. The latter simply means religion as understood in the traditional sense, the personal beliefs and approach of the individual to God. Dīn however means a complete system of life. Modernist individuals like Iqbal, Mawdudi, G. A. Parwez and Dr. Israr Ahmad all carefully made this distinction between Din and Madhhab. Iqbal, for example, produced the following couplet:

ملا کو جو ہے ہند میں سجدے کی اجازت
نادان سمجھتا ہے کہ اسلام ہے آزاد

In India, if bare leave be deigned his prayer-prostration
Our dull Mulla thinks Islam has gained emancipation

Now it is true that the word al-Dīn has a broad range of meanings. Mawdudians and Parwezis point to the use of the word where it signifies “law” or “system”:

مَا كَانَ لِيَأْخُذَ أَخَاهُ فِي دِينِ الْمَلِكِ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّـهُ۝
(Joseph) could not take his brother by the law [Dîn] of the king, except that Allah willed it.
(Sura 12: 76)

According to the Arabic-English Dictionary of Qur’anic Usage, the word al-Dīn means: 1. religion, faith 2. true religion, true faith 3. the teachings of the religion 4. worship, obedience, submission 5. law, custom, code 6. judgment 7. reckoning, counting, calculation (p. 320 - 321)
It is therefore highly spurious to understand the word Dīn as used throughout the Qur’an to only mean “law, custom, code” by giving the isolated example of Sura 12: 76 and ignoring the rest of its linguistic meanings. This is how those infected by the virus of Mawdudian thought have erred in interpreting the blessed Ayah I have quoted at the beginning “It is He Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth to manifest it over all religion”.

But the final nail in the coffin to this absurd Mawdudian interpretation of the Ayah is the Hadith narrated by sayyida A’isha (Allah be pleased with her):
I heard Allah's Messenger as saying: The (system) of night and day would not end until the people have taken to the worship of Lat and 'Uzza. I said: Allah's Messenger, I think when Allah has revealed this verse: “He it is Who has sent His Messenger with right guidance, and true religion, so that He may cause it to prevail upon all religions, though the polytheists are averse (to it)" (9: 33), it implies that (this promise) is going to be fulfilled. Thereupon he (Allah's Apostle) said: It would happen as Allah would like. Then Allah would send the sweet fragrant air by which everyone who has even a mustard grain of faith in Him would die and those only would survive who would have no goodness in them. And they would revert to the religion of their forefathers. (Sahih Muslim)

This Hadith is significant as it points to the correct meaning of Dīn al-Haqq as used in the Ayah (9: 33) as meaning the exclusive worship of Allah as opposed to polytheism. When the Prophet predicted that a time will come when people will once against resurrect the cults of Lāt and ‘Uzzā, his illustrious wife and our mother, sayyida A’isha referenced the Ayah in question as stating that Islam, the Dīn-al-Haqq, will prevail over all other adyān. However, the Prophet, rather than negating the understanding of Dīn-al-Haqq from sayyida A’isha, rather confirmed her interpretation but qualified the fact that Islam will prevail over all other religions as something that will not be permanent, and that before Judgment Day the Arabs will revert to the Dīn, meaning the worship, of their astray ancestors.

Thousand Months of Umayyad Rule (Sura 97: 3)

A critical aspect of the Book of Allah - the Holy Qur’an - which many Muslims overlook is its prophetic theme. Nothing in the Qur’an is arbitrary or coincidental, its every word and phrase requires deep reflection and study. Such is the example of the proceeding Ayah:

لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ۝

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months
(Sura 97: 3)

To the unaware, mention of a ‘thousand months’ is simply for emphasis and there is no other significance of that peculiar amount of time. However, the truth is that there is nothing random or arbitrary about Allah Most High saying a ‘thousand months’. The Prophet’s grandson Imam Hassan b. ‘Ali (Allah be pleased with him) narrated the reason for the revelation of this blessed Ayah and its true significance. He states that the Prophet Muhammad had a vision in which he saw the Umayyads upon his pulpit. This greatly perturbed the Prophet and so to console him Allah revealed to Him the aforementioned Verse, which according to Imam Hassan b. ‘Ali, means:
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months in which Bani Umayya rules after you, O Muhammad ” (Jaami al-Tirmidhi; Hadith 3350)
One of the narrators, al-Qasim b. al-Fadl al-Huddani, comments:
فَعَدَدْنَاهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ أَلْفُ شَهْرٍ لاَ يَزِيدُ يَوْمٌ وَلاَ يَنْقُصُ
“So we counted them, and found that they were one-thousand months, not a day more nor less.”
Meaning that the duration of Umayyad rule was exactly one thousand months when they calculated it. The Umayyad dynasty began with Mu’awiya b. Abi Sufyan in 661 CE, after his peace agreement with Imam Hasan and ended with Marwan b. Muhammad b. Marwan (or Marwan II) in 750, when the Umayyads were decisively defeated by the Abbasids. The period of Umayyad rule (89 years) is therefore little over a thousand months. The Umayyad rulers in chronological order including their period of rule is as follows:

1. Mu’awiya b. Abi Sufyan (661 - 680)
2. Yazid b. Mu’awiya (680 - 683)
3. Mu’awiya b. Yazid (683 - 684)
4. Marwan b. al-Hakam (684 - 685)
5. Abdal Malik b. Marwan (685 - 705)
6. al-Walid b. Abdal Malik (705 - 715)
7. Sulayman b. Abdal Malik (715 - 717)
8. Umar b. Abdal Aziz (717 - 720)
9. Yazid b. Abdal Malik (720 - 724)
10. Hisham b. Abdal Malik (724 - 743)
11. al-Walid b. Yazid (743 - 744)
12. Yazid b. al-Walid (744 - 744)
13. Ibrahim b. al-Walid (744 - 744)
14. Marwan b. Muhammad (744 - 750)

Some people may question the authenticity of the Hadith reported in Tirmidhi’s collection. However, the Salafi Muhaddith, Zubair Ali Zai, has stated that except for a slight problem in the narration of Yusuf b. Sa’d from Imam al-Hassan, the rest of the Sanad is ‘Hasan’ (sound), and that Imam al-Hakim al-Nishapuri authenticated it. (Anwar al-Sahifa p. 291)

In conclusion, we can see how Allah in the Holy Qur’an has cited the dynastic rule of the Umayyads as the ‘thousand months’, and that Lailat-al-Qadr (‘the Night of Decree’) is better than it. We can therefore infer that by ‘Night of Decree’ Allah is actually speaking of the Prophetic period, since He goes on to say ‘the Angels and the Spirit descend therein by the permission of their Lord’ (the period of revelation to the Prophet Muhammad )

And Allah knows best.

Ibn Taymiyya's Interpretation of Sura 42: 51 (Revelation to Non-Prophets)

In a previous entry I quoted the great Islamic scholar known as ‘Shaikh-ul-Islam’ Ibn Taymiyya’s (rahimahullah) interpretation of the Ayat-al-Karima:

وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَن يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّـهُ إِلَّا وَحْيًا أَوْ مِن وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ أَوْ يُرْسِلَ رَسُولًا فَيُوحِيَ بِإِذْنِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ ۚ إِنَّهُ عَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ

And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a Messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High and Wise.

(Sura 42: 51)

In his tafsir of this Ayat, Shaykh-ul-Islām Ibn Taymiyya explains that the Wahi spoken of here is vouchsafed to Prophets and non-Prophets, such as the Muhaddathin and Mulhamin:

يتناول وحى الأنبياء وغيرهم كالمحدثين الملهمين

I quoted this reference from a collected work of Ibn Taymiyya’s exegesis (Tafsiraat Ibn Taymiyya). However, now I reproduce the original source which is Ibn Taymiyya’s book Kitab al-Nubuwwaat (p. 691)

Reality of the Caliphate (Davidic and Fatimid)

Allah says:

“O David, verily, We have made you a Vicegerent in the land; so judge between mankind with the Truth and do not follow desires, as it will lead you astray from the Path of Allah.” (Sura 38: 26)

King David was granted the favor of becoming the King of Israel and his progeny ruled over Israel and Judea for many generations as kings, i.e., the Davidic dynasty. The Israelites had always wanted God to grant them a monarchy so that they could be strengthened. This is parallel to the contemporary Muslim yearning for the establishment of a Caliphate. This is why Allah refers to King David as a ‘Khalifa’ He had established in the Earth. The function of the Caliphate is to judge between mankind with truth and justice. So long as it fulfills this responsibility it will be favored by God, but once it descends into despotic behavior ‘following desires’ it will have become astray from the Path of God and then subject to a ‘severe punishment’ (Sura 38: 26). After King Solomon, the Israelite kingdom was divided in two, and the northern kingdom was destroyed by the Assyrians in the late 8th century BCE. The southern kingdom persisted, but it too came to an end during the Babylonian captivity at the head of the 6th century BCE and the last Davidic king of Judah was Zedekiah. The glad-tidings of a Messiah was given to the Israelites, someone through whom God would restore the Davidic dynasty and restore the glory remnicient of Kings David and Solomon (peace be upon them both). As Muslims we believe that Davidic Messiah, the ‘Branch of Jesse’ and ‘Lion of Judah’ was Jesus of Nazareth (peace be upon him). Yet the Jews, under the toxic influence of their corrupt religious leaders, rabbis and priests, rejected their Messiah. Likewise, Allah established the Caliphate for the Mohammedan dispensation through the Prophet’s right-hand man and senior most disciple, Abu Bakr. This caliphate was not hereditary, but it too was based on judging between mankind with truth and justice. However, this Caliphate upon the Prophetic Model, or Khilafat ‘alal-Minhaj al-Nubuwwa, only lasted a brief period – 30 years. Then the despotic Umayyads seized power, followed by the Abbasids, then various Turkic and Mamluk dynasties until the Muslims were overtaken by colonialism. Hence the promised ‘severe punishment’ (Sura 38: 26) visited the Muslims too, as it had visited the Israelites through the agency of the Assyrians, Babylonians and Romans. But for the Muslims, the ‘severe punishment’ was through the agency of the Turks, Mongols, Tatars (Gog & Magog), through the agency of the Crusaders, and most recently, through the agency of European colonialism. Muslims not only lost their Rightly-Guided Caliphate upon the Prophetic Model, but they even lost dominion over the land as the various Muslim dynasties, despite being despotic, were destroyed through the agency of the Golden Horde (Mongols) and through European colonialism. Now just as a Davidic Messiah was promised to restore the Davidic dynasty, so too a Fatimid Mahdi has been promised to the Muslims from the progeny of the Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima (peace be upon them). In fact, the restoration of the Davidic caliphate through the Messiah of Nazareth is still a divine promise which is going to be fulfilled, but it will be for the benefit of the Muslim Believers and not the atheist and faithless Zionists. Likewise, a Fatimid and Alawite government will be established through the promised Mahdi some time before the second coming of the Messiah.

Emergence of Sufyani of Damascus

Is Bashar Assad the Sufyani? I believe so. In a Hadith the Prophet is reported to have said:

“There shall emerge a man called the ‘Sufyaani’ from the depths of Damascus. Most of those who follow him will be from Kalb (tribe). He will murder and even rip open the bellies of women and kill little children. Qays (tribe) shall gather against him, but he will kill them. And a man shall emerge from my Ahli Bait (Household) in Harra, and (news of it) will reach the ‘Sufyaani’. So he will send against him [Mahdi] a force from among his forces, but he [Mahdi] will defeat them. Then the ‘Sufyaani’ will march towards him accompanied by those who are with him, then when he is in a plain, they will be swallowed up by the earth and none of them will be saved except the one who will tell others about them” (Mustadrak al-Hakim)

Imam al-Hakim stated that this Hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim. Imam al-Dhahabi agreed with him in Talkhis.

This critical Hadith informs us that the time for the emergence of the promised Mahdi is at hand. As the civil war in Syria winds down and Assad consolidates his victory, we can expect the Mahdi to now appear in the Hejaz any minute now – In Sha Allah. This Hadith also accords with the more well-known prophecy of the awaited Fatimid Mahdi that he shall leave Medina for Mecca, where he shall be recognized and given the pledge of allegiance by the Muslims under the shade of the sacred Ka’ba. Then an army shall come up against him in the direction of the north but will suffer an amazing natural disaster as the Earth collapses under them before they can reach their target.

Coming back to the Sufyani, this is the title of an evil man who will slaughter many people, and commit horrible atrocities against women and children. Assad definitely fits this description as even the international community horrified by his unspeakable war crimes, massacring of innocent women and children, in order to strike fear into the hearts of the Syrians and maintain his harsh, despotic rule. The title Sufyani indicates that this evil dictator is an enemy of Islam, and enemy of the emerging Mahdi, and following in the footsteps of the Sufyanid Umayyads, particular Yazid, the grandson of Abu Sufyan. It should be remembered that the wretched Umayyad dynasty were based in Damascus, Syria. Assad’s Baathist regime is a Middle Eastern adaption of European fascism and highly influenced by the deeds of genocidal dictators Hitler and Stalin. Saddam of Iraq was also a Baathist known for his murderous treatment of the Iraqi Shi’ites, the ethnic Kurds, and all political opposition to his regime. But while Saddam was thankfully toppled in 2003 and Iraq liberated from his iron fist rule, Assad has survived the civil war largely by depending on support from Russia, Iran and so-called “Hizbullah” of Lebanon. Like Saddam before him, Assad has ruthlessly used chemical weapons against his own people, including little children, shocking the conscience of the whole world and fulfilling the dreadful prophecy of the Prophet Muhammad

But Muslims should not lose heart, because the prophecy has not yet been completely fulfilled. It was predicted that the Sufyani would decimate the opposite that initially gathered against him, described as people from the Qays tribe – referring to the largely Sunni rebels like the FSA. But this victory for the Sufyani will be short lived as the promised Mahdi will now soon rise up in Mecca and represent the hope for the oppressed and weak Muslims of the world.
