Hairstyle of the Prophet

Many people imagine that the Prophet Muhammad's (sall Allahu alaihi wasallam) kept long hair but would tuck his sidelocks, or the hair at the front sides of his blessed head, behind his ears. This is indeed the prevalent style among religious Sunni Muslims who keep longish hair.

Sayyidina Anas bin Malik (radi Allahu anhu) narrates about the Prophet Muhammad (sall Allahu alaihi wasallam):

that his hair would touch his shoulders”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Keeping long, shoulder length hair out of imitation and love for the Prophet (sall Allahu alaihi wasallam) is tragically a Sunnah that is by and large no longer practised by Muslim men today. Instead they tend to prefer shaved or extremely short hair, usually out of imitation of non-Muslims and evil celebrities. Those Muslim men who do keep long hair, wanting to practise the blessed Sunnah, tend to tuck their hair behind their ears. However, Imam al-Baihaqi (rahimahullah) explains:

[The Messenger], peace and blessings be upon him, would sometimes make his hair into four braids, the right ear coming out from between two braids that were surrounding it, and the left ear coming out from between two braids which were surrounding it. And the two ears would come forth with their whiteness from between these braids as if they were two brilliant stars lit up from amidst the blackness of his hair.” (Dala'il an-Nubuwwah; v.1, p.300):

Therefore, the Sunnah for a man is to grow out his hair shoulder length, and separate the hair into four parts, two parts left hanging in front of the ears and two parts left hanging behind the ears, whether the hair is braided or unbraided.

Yusuf al-Qaradawi: The Anti-Mujaddid

Controversial “Islamic scholar” Yusuf al-Qaradawi passed away recently (26 September 2022). In my perspective, this individual was an Imam of misguidance, a term used by our most holy Prophet Muhammad

I only fear for my Ummah the misguided Imams”

Sayyidina Abi Dharr al-Ghifari رضى الله عنه has narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that other than the Dajjal what he fears [most] for his Ummah are the misguided Imams (Musnad Ahmad; v.35, pp.222-223, #21296-21297):

While I am certainly not alone in criticizing Qaradawi (most of the traditional Sunni scholastic circles are deeply critical of him) my criticism of him is deeper than simply a reaction to some of his scandalous fatawa. For the reader’s benefit, I shall enumerate some of those fatawa: 1. he condoned suicide bombings by Palestinian terrorists against the State of Israel 2. he denied the punishment of rajm (stoning) for the one guilty of adultery 3. he allowed Muslims to finance homes by paying interest to a bank 4. he didn’t nullify the marriage of a lady who converts to Islam with her non-Muslim husband.

Commenting on an election in which a candidate won 99% of the vote, Qaradawi said: “If Allah had presented himself to the people as a candidate he would not have been able to take this amount!” This statement is manifest kufr, as it is denial of the omnipotence of Allah معاذ الله

Qaradawi was associated with the dangerous group known as Ikhwan al-Muslimun (so-called Muslim Brotherhood) based in Egypt. This group is characterized by a tendency to overlook fundamental theological differences among the various sects of the Ummah and unite them politically behind their banner. It seeks to modernize the conception and practice of Islam and is inherently at odds with traditional Sunni orthodoxy in this regard. The Ikhwanis are heavily involved in politics. They are a gateway to the more radical Kharijite and Shi’ite tendencies which seek to overthrow all of the governments and replace them with their interpretation of an “Islamic state”. Ikhwanis are known for political agitation and creating civil strife in the Muslim world. They organize and participate in street demonstrations. At times they even devolve into outright terrorism. For example, Hamas in Palestine and the Hasm movement in Egypt are associated with Ikhwan al-Muslimun. Qaradawi expressed sympathy if not outright support for such violent, extremist groups. Qaradawi was in fact considered the spiritual and intellectual guide of the Ikhwan al-Muslimun. He was rightly banned from entry into many countries around the world, Muslim and non-Muslim alike.

Qaradawi also represented the modernist stream in Muslim thought, associated with figures like Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Jamal ud-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida. The modernist tendency is generally characterized by softening the strictures of the Shari’ah to accomodate the desires of the people and deflect from the negative criticism of non-Muslims. It also lays the framework for the cultural assimilation of Muslims into the dominant Western civilization. That inevitably results in ideas of liberalism, democracy, feminism and nationalism rapidly spreading like a cancer within the Ummah. The modernists question and play with the fundamental laws and practices of Islam. They challenge the supposed “patriarchal” elements of Islam which are perceived as oppressive toward women. They seek to soften the strict laws of the Shari’ah against usury or interest. They question the practice of polygyny which orthodox Islam encourages. They make music unrestrictedly permissible, and also have a permissive attitude toward keeping pet dogs, and other cultural idiosyncrasies deeply ingrained in Western/European culture. Those who consider Qaradawi or men like him Mujaddids should know that a true Mujaddid is characterized by zeal for the Shari’ah and the Sunnah, not a permissive attitude toward the strictures of Islam. A true Mujaddid is someone who seeks to create distance between the Ummah and the corrosive beliefs and practices of the heathen world. Qaradawi should instead be considered an anti-Mujaddid.

Divine Attribute of Smelling

The Torah explicitly affirms the attribute of smelling for God:

And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a sweet savour (Genesis 8:20-21) see also Leviticus 1:9,13; 2:2; 23:18

However, most Muslims stop short of affirming this attribute for Allah, including the Atharis. I personally believe that Allah has this attribute, without any anthropomorphism, and Shaykh Ibn Baz, the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, mentioned the likelihood or possibility of this being true when he was asked:

Question: Can the attribute of smelling be affirmed for Allah, Mighty and Glorified, from the Hadith “The smell that comes from the mouth of a fasting person is more fragrant to Allah than the scent of musk”?

Answer: It is not far-fetched

(Masa’il ul-Imam Ibn Baz; p.278, #770)

Color of Allah (2:138)

Allah Most High says:

The Dye of Allah! And what dye is better than that from Allah? And we are for Him worshippers

(Surah 2:138)

This blessed Ayah has several layers of meaning and significance. The commentators are generally agreed that it is referring to Religion of Allah, meaning Islam. However, the following narration from sayyidina Ibn Abbas رضى الله عنهما may indicate a theological significance for the term Sibghat Allâh

Sa’id bin Jubair from Ibn Abbas that the children of Israel said “O Moses, does your Lord dye?” He [Moses] said “fear Allah!” So his Lord called out to him [saying] “O Moses, do they ask you ‘does your Lord dye?’” So he [Moses] said “yes”. [Allah said] “I dye with the colors red, white and black; all the colors are in My Dye” so Allah sent down upon His Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, “The Dye of Allah, and is there more beautiful a dye than that from Allah? And we are His worshippers” (2:138)

(Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim; p.245)

The narration is a proof for the excellence of the combination of three colors; red, white and black. Incidentally, a Jewish midrash (Numbers Rabbah) states that the tribal banner of the Levites, the tribe to which Prophet Moses عليه السلام belonged, was red, white and black. It may also be said that this blessed Ayah (2:138) and the narration of Ibn Abbas رضى الله عنهما explaining it is are an indication that the Person of Allah possesses the attribute of color “Every color is in My Dye”, and that the color of Allah is better and more beautiful than any other color conceivable, for it contains all colors.

Warning About False Prophets

And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah, or says, ‘It has been revealed to me,’ while nothing has been revealed to him

(Surah 6:93)

The Mufassirîn are generally agreed that this portion of the Ayah was revealed concerning the pretender and false prophet Musailimah bin Habib لعنة الله عليه but it applies to all such liars who specifically claim that Allah has sent down revelation upon them when in fact Allah hasn’t revealed anything to them. Note that the Ayah does not state that any claimant of wahî is ipso facto a liar only that whoever fabricates this specific claim is among the most unjust. As I have explained extensively throughout this blog there indeed exists the possibility and actuality of Saints and Believers of this Ummah receiving divine revelation from Allah. The most holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said as a corollary to this Ayah:

The Hour will not be established until there arise nearly thirty antichrists and liars, each of them claiming that he is the Messenger of God

(agreed upon Hadith)

The prophecy of the appearance of nearly thirty pretenders from this Ummah claiming to be Prophets and Messengers of God is highly significant. As per my research this prophecy is established from mutawâtir [narrations that are mass-transmitted at every level of transmission] and therefore there can be no doubt regarding it. Beginning with the infamous pretenders Musailimah and al-Aswad al-Ansi who arose during the very lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, (both having initially feigned the Faith of Islam and testifying to the Prophesy of Muhammad) there have risen countless counterfeit prophets in this Ummah, although most have been of no consequence save for nearly thirty who may truly be described as dajjâlûn (great deceivers or antichrists). The last and most dangerous of these is the one-eyed Dajjal whose appearance in the End of Days is a Sign of the impending Apocalypse. Some of the other notorious antichrists and false prophets that have arisen from this Ummah are al-Mukhtar bin Abi Ubaid al-Thaqafi, al-Harith bin Sa’id al-Dimashqi, Salih bin Tarif, Ishaq al-Akhras, Hamim bin Min Allah al-Ghumari, Mirza Husayn-Ali Nuri the so-called “Bahaullah” and Dr. Rashad Khalifa to name a few.

Antichrist Rashad Khalifa Declared Usury Permissible

The antichrist and pretender Dr. Rashad Khalifa, who proclaimed that he was a new ‘Messenger of God’, wrote in a footnote to the passage in the Quran (2:275-278):

Normal interest - less than 20% - where no one is victimized and everyone is satisfied, is not usury.” (Quran: The Final Testament, p.28):

The sign of a false prophet or self-proclaimed apostle of God is that he violates the Shari’a and permits others to do so. The most holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is reported to have said:

For a man to knowingly consume a single dirham of riba [usury] is worse than committing fornication thirty-six times

(Musnad Ahmad)

Divine Command to Grow the Beard

The fitnah of Ghamidi is spreading like a virus in the body of the Muslims. Among his perversions is the idea that growing a beard for a man is not a religious commandment but a discretionary matter. To refute such nonsense I shall quote a Hadith of the most holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم which explicitly states that for a man to trim his mustache and grow a beard is a divine command of the Lord Himself:

Ubaid Allah bin Abd Allah narrates: A Magian came to the Messenger of Allah [sall Allahu alaihi wasallam], his moustache left untrimmed and his beard shaven, so the Messenger of Allah asked, “Who ordered you with this?” He said, “My lord [Chosroes, the Persian emperor]”, the Messenger of Allah said, “But my Lord [Allah] ordered me to trim closely my moustache and leave my beard” (Tabaqat al-Kubra, v.1, p.347):

Yazid bin Abi Habib narrates that two Magians entered upon the Messenger of Allah, their beards were shaved while their moustaches were left [untrimmed]. So the Messenger of Allah disliked looking at them, then he turned to them and said “Woe unto you! Who ordered you to do this?” They said, “Our lord ordered with this” meaning Chosroes. So the Messenger of Allah said, “Rather my Lord has ordered me to leave my beard and shorten my moustache” (Sahih Tarikh at-Tabari, v.2, p.235):

Both of these routes for the transmission of the Hadith are mursal. However, the muhaddith al-Albani declared this narration hasan (Fiqh us-Sirah of Muhammad al-Ghazali, p.389) due to the corroborating Hadith narrated by sayyidina Abi Hurairah

A Magian entered upon the Messenger of Allah [sall Allahu alaihi wasallam] with his beard shaved and his moustache left untrimmed. So the Messenger of Allah [sall Allahu alaihi wasallam] said: “Woe unto you! Who ordered you with this?” He said, “Chosroes ordered me with this” so the Messenger of Allah said, “But my Lord [Allah], Mighty and Majestic, ordered me to leave my beard and trim closely my moustache” (al-Amali li-Ibni Bushran, p.73):

Noah Eldest of the Prophets is Proof Jesus is Deceased

Allahعز وجل says regarding his great messenger Noah:

And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he dwelt among them a thousand years save fifty years

(Surah 29:14)

The Bible confirms that Noah lived for a total of 950 years (Genesis 9:29).

Sayyidina Anas bin Malik رضى الله عنه narrates that the holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said:

Adam shall be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to him, “Intercede” but he will say, “I am not worthy of that, but upon you is Noah, for indeed he is the first of the Prophets and the eldest of them” (Musnad al-Bazar, v.12, pp.341-342, #6223; at-Tawhid li-Ibni Khuzaymah, p.719, #459):

This Hadith confirms the fact that Noah is the eldest of the Prophets of God, having lived at least 950 years. This incidentally negates the popular but erroneous belief among Muslims that Jesus is alive in Heaven with his earthly body though some 2000 years have transpired since he came into this world. And if it is argued that after having physically ascended into Heaven the aging process for Jesus has been suspended then that would imply he did not ascend in his earthly body, which is a body that not only requires food for sustenance (Surah 21:8) but experiences the natural process of aging too (Surah 36:68).

Apparently this Hadith states that Noah and not Adam was the first Prophet. However, other narrations clarify that what is intended is that Noah was the first Prophet and Messenger of God sent to the people of Earth:

They will say, “O Noah, you are the first of the Apostles to the people of Earth” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Al-Hallaj and Crucifixion of Jesus

One of the controversial mystics in the history of Islam, Husain bin Mansur al-Hallaj (d. 309 H) who was executed by crucifixion under the authority of the Abbasids, is reported to have recited a portion of the Ayah (4:157) while being crucified:

They did not kill him nor did they crucify him but it was made to appear to them” (Fadâ’ih al-Bâtiniyyah, p.109):

This indicates that al-Hallaj believed that the Messiah على نبينا وعليه السلام was apparently crucified as he was being apparently crucified at that time, but that in reality it could not be said that they were responsible for killing him.

Mu'tazilite Denial of Disclosing of Unseen to Saints

The Mu’tazilite exegete Abul-Qasim Mahmud bin Umar al-Zamakhshari commenting on the passage of the Quran:

Knower of the unseen, so He does not manifest His unseen upon anyone except one He is pleased with of an Apostle

(Surah 72:26-27)

An explanation of the one He is pleased with, that is, He does not inform of the unseen except to the one chosen for Prophesy particularly, and not every one He is pleased with. And in this is a falsification of the karâmât [miracles of the Saints] because although Saints are ones with whom Allah is pleased they are not Apostles. Allah has particularized the Apostles from among those with whom He is pleased for disclosing of the unseen. And it is a falsification of fortune telling and astrology as its companions are the furthest from Allah’s contentment but are entered into His discontent (al-Kashshâf, p.1149):

I have previously answered the doubt raised by the Mu’tazilah and others concerning this passage in the Quran.

Some Mu'tazilah Denied Reality of Dreams

Imam Ibn Abd al-Barr رحمة الله عليه said:

No one rejects (the value of) dreams except the people of ilhâd and a small group of the Mu’tazilah” (at-Tamhîd; v.1, p.285):

Barelwi Denies Humanity of the Prophet

The most holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said:

Do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the Son of Mary. For verily I am His [Allah’s] slave, so say ‘Slave of Allah and His Apostle’

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم delivered this critical statement and warning with the revealed foreknowledge that a section of his Ummah would trespass the boundaries of monotheism and manufacture doctrines concerning his person that are similar to what the Christians said concerning Christ Jesus. In their Christology, Jesus is both God and human, with these two apparently contradictory and mutually exclusive natures being united in a hypostasis. Islam, however, based on the teachings of the holy Quran and the holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم says that Jesus was a mortal human, not divine, and that he was simply an Apostle of God like the many Prophets and Apostles God sent before him. Now the most holy Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم predicted that his Ummah would follow in some of the same errors as those that preceded them, namely, the Jews and Christians. The astray and polytheistic Barelwi sect believe that the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is literally Nûr (Light), like the Angels, but also Bashar (mortal human). However, like the Christian doctrine of Jesus having two natures, human and divine, the Barelwi belief that the Prophet عليه السلام is both a being of light and mortal is contradictory, an oxymoron. In fact, according to the Barelwi scholar, Ahmad Yar Khan Na’imi, the humanity of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is illusory. He writes:

In this Ayah the Kuffar [unbelievers] are addressed, because everything hates that which is another species, so it was said ‘O unbelievers, do not be fearful of me, I am of your species i.e. I am human’. A predator mimicks the sounds of animals for hunting. The purpose is to incline the unbelievers to oneself, and Deobandis are also from among the Kuffar [unbelievers], so they may also be addressed [in this Ayah].” (Jâ’ al-Haq, p.162):

In this statement not only has the Barelwi made mass-Takfîr of the Deobandis, he has clearly denied the humanity of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and he has also indirectly disrespected the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم by comparing him to predators that seek to deceive their prey by mimicking their sounds for the purpose of hunting. In other words, the Barelwi mulla is implying that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم only stated that he is a bashar [human] to incline the unbelievers toward him when in reality he is not human but a being of Light.
