In the previous entry I discussed Mawdudi’s novel but dangerous idea that Deen is
synonymous with government and political power. In this entry we will look at
Mawdudi’s contention that it is impossible to reform the morals of a society
without access to the government and political power. Mawdudi writes:
“No scheme for
the reformation of mankind will work without seizing control of the powers of
the government. Whoever truly wishes to obliterate evil and corruption from God’s
Earth and truly wants that the creation of God be morally reformed, then for
him to merely become a preacher and adviser is useless. He should rise up and
put an end to the government based on incorrect principles by grabbing
political power from the hands of deviated people and establish a government
based on correct principles and correct ways.” (Khutbat; p.260)
Furthermore,
according to Mawdudi, the root cause of the people being morally corrupt is
that their government and rulers are corrupt:
“You have
learnt that to a large extent the root of the corruption which spreads in the
lives of God’s servants is due to the corruption of the government” (ibid)
*Needless to say, Mawdudi's contention that moral reformation is impossible without political power is something that opposes the teachings of the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. We know that the Prophets of God, such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them) were sent to reform mankind through their preaching and counseling to the people. However, Mawdudi absurdly claims that merely preaching is futile for the purpose of reforming mankind.
