In the previous entry, I quoted al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir’s view that Ya’juj wa
Ma’juj are the Turks and Mongols. Here I shall present the researched
conclusions of the Indian Muslim scholar, Abul-Kalam Azad (1888-1958). He writes
that Gog and Magog are those wild but powerful nomadic tribes whose raids
motivated the Chinese to construct the Great Wall (Ashabi Kahf aur Ya’juj Ma’juj
p.95):
Azad goes on to explain that in Asia one of their branches are known as the
Tartars, and whom the Greeks knew as the Scythians. Furthermore, the Mongols
must be identified with Magog. He writes that the Chinese refered to the
Mongols as “Mog”, which is similar to Magog (ibid p.96):
