ِMormonism is one of the most—if the not the most—openly polytheistic religion in the world today. Calling themselves the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS for short, this was a religion founded by the false prophet Joseph Smith (1805-1844). Despite claiming to be a prophet, Joseph Smith was a man of questionable character. He was a treasure hunter who claimed a magical ability to locate valuable treasure using a seer stone. In 1825, one Josiah Stowell, convinced of Joseph Smith’s supernatural ability to locate buried treasure, hired him for that purpose. But all the attempts of this false prophet and charlatan were unsuccessful. He was even charged with fraudulent activity, specifically engaging in divination, and later charged with banking fraud for which he was convicted. He was also charged with assault and conspiracy to murder. Charges like these are what drove Joseph Smith and his followers to flee westward from the law. He claimed to have had a vision of an angel named Moroni who told him the location of buried golden plates and the method to translate them, as they had been recorded in an ancient Egyptian language. The translation of these alleged golden plates is what forms the basis of the Mormon scripture called the Book of Mormon. The unique teaching of this text, obviously fabricated by Joseph Smith himself, is that just prior to the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews in the 6th century BCE, a supposed prophet named Lehi and his family escaped by sea to the New World. Their descendants populated the New World, with a son of Lehi named Laman being the progenitor of the Lamanites—who are the modern day Native Americans! Just consider how ridiculous this religion is which teaches that the Amerindians are descendants of a Jewish family from the Iron Age Kingdom of Judah that migrated to the New World by sailing across the Atlantic! Yet Mormons today are apparently not troubled by the complete lack of any genetic or archaeological evidence for such a central teaching of their religion, “prophet” and scripture. In fact, the Mormon church is rapidly growing—having about seventeen million members worldwide—due to its aesthetic and cultural appeal primarily from what I can gather. The romantic image of the successful, happy White suburban family emphatically advertised by the Mormons seems to motivate many Americans and others to convert to this modern religion considering the rest of Western society and civilization has become irreparably corrupt and broken.
Now our biggest issue with the Mormon religion is its unabashed polytheism. Joseph Smith said, “I will preach on the plurality of Gods. I have selected this text for that express purpose. I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Deity, it has been the plurality of Gods. It has been preached by the Elders for fifteen years. I have always declared God to be a distinct personage, Jesus Christ a separate and distinct personage from God the Father, and that the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a Spirit: and these three constitute three distinct personages and three Gods. If this is in accordance with the New Testament, lo and behold! we have three Gods anyhow, and they are plural; and who can contradict it? Our text says, ‘And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father.’ The Apostles have discovered that there were Gods above, for Paul says God was the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. My object was to preach the scriptures, and preach the doctrine they contain, there being a God above, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am bold to declare I have taught all the strong doctrines publicly, and always teach stronger doctrines in public than in private. John was one of the men, and apostles declare they were made kings and priests unto God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It reads just so in the Revelation. Hence, the doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as prominent in the Bible as any other doctrine. It is all over the face of the Bible. It stands beyond the power of controversy. A wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err therein. Paul says there are Gods many and Lords many. I want to set it forth in a plain and simple manner; but to us there is but one God—that is pertaining to us; and he is in all and through all. But if Joseph Smith says there are Gods many and Lords many, they cry, ‘Away with him! Crucify him! Crucify him!’ Mankind verily say that the Scriptures are with them. Search the Scriptures, for they testify of things that these apostates would gravely pronounce blasphemy. Paul, if Joseph Smith is a blasphemer, you are. I say there are Gods many and Lords many, but to us only one, and we are to be in subjection to that one, and no man can limit the bounds or the eternal existence of eternal time. Hath he beheld the eternal world, and is he authorized to say that there is only one God? He makes himself a fool if he thinks or says so, and there is an end of his career or progress in knowledge. He cannot obtain all knowledge, for he has sealed up the gate to it.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp.370-371)
The Mormon doctrine of exaltation, that if a person faithfully adheres to the Mormon religion he or she may one day become a god, was expressed in the following words of the fifth Mormon “prophet” and president, Lorenzo Snow, “As man now is, God once was: As God now is, man may be.” (Biography and Family Record of Lorenzo Snow, p.46)
Mormons believe that their god was once a man like us, and that they too have the potential to become gods like him! Nothing further need be furnished to dismiss this religion as a satanic heresy.
Incidentally, there are some uncanny parallels between the Mormon heresy that is an offshoot of Christianity and the so-called Ahmadiyyah Movement—Qadianism—which is a heresy that emerged out of the Muslim milieu. Their respective false prophets, Joseph Smith and Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, were from the same century. Both made outlandish claims. Joseph Smith said that an Israelite family migrated to the Americas and populated the empty continent, being the forebears of the modern-day Amerindians and that Jesus Christ had appeared to prophets that were raised among them, while Mirza Ghulam Ahmad claimed that Jesus Christ survived the crucifixion only to migrate eastward where he eventually made it to Kashmir, and that his tomb can be found today in Srinagar! Both these liars founded their own communities, highly organized and disciplined organizations, though each suffered schism in their early days, with breakaway groups from both churches persisting till this day. The Mormons established themselves in Salt Lake City, the capital of the State of Utah which they dominate, while the Qadianis established a town which they call Rabwah in Pakistan, which has been described as a “state within a state”. They both are fanatically devoted to missionary activity and send out trained missionaries to convert unsuspecting and naive people to their religions.
