Qasim Nanautwi: Prophethood of Ancient Prophets is Accidental

Among the idiosyncrasies of the wayward Deobandi sect is their highly guarded secret, a doctrine that is rarely if ever shared among the public by their preachers and learned ones, that the prophethood of all the Prophets عليهم السلام with the exception of Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وسلامه عليه are accidental and not essential. Previously, I cited a Deobandi scholar, Qari Muhammad Tayyab Qasimi (d. 1983) who stated that the prophethood of sayyidina Muhammadصلوات الله وسلامه عليه is real and original, while the prophethood of the other Prophets عليهم السلام is not real or original but an emanation of Prophet Muhammad’s prophethood. Of course, Qari Tayyab Qasimi did not originate this doctrine but simply inherited it from the founder of his sect, Mawlana Muhammad Qasim of Nanawta (d. 1880). In his book Tahdhir un-Nas the Mawlana wrote that the Seal of Prophecy would not be broken if, hypothetically, another prophet were to come after him chronologically on another Earth on even on this very Earth. He also wrote that the laity’s understanding of the Seal of Prophecy as meaning chronological finality entails no excellence or superiority for Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وسلامه عليه, because there is no inherent virtue in being the first or last chronologically, therefore the Mawlana rhetorically asks how can such a notion be correct. According to Mawlana Qasim of Nanawta, it is only the illustrious Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وسلامه عليه who is a prophet in his essence (بالذات), while all the other prophets, from Adam to Jesus عليهم السلام are prophets accidentally (بالعرض), meaning their respective prophethoods are an accidental and not essential property of their sacred personages. Needless to say, it should be understood that the Mawlana is using these terms (essential and accidental) in the Aristotelian sense. Hence he writes:
“The Apostle of Allah peace be upon him is attributed with prophethood in essence and apart from him the other Prophets are attributed with it accidentally.” (Tahdhir un-Nas p.10):

“The prophethood of others is from his emanation.” (Tahdhir un-Nas pp.6, 13):

Now this idea that the prophethood of the ancient Prophets, Adam to Jesus peace be upon them, is for them an accidental property and not an original prophethood but attained as an emanation from the Prophet Muhammadصلوات الله وسلامه عليه is absolutely false and has no basis in the actual teachings of Islam. Yes, it is correct to describe the sainthood and ‘partial prophethood’ meaning prophetic experiences and excellences exhibited by the pious Believers of this Umma as a faid (emanation) of the Prophet Muhammad In other words, such language and terms may be used to describe the spiritual levels that are attained by the pious saints within this Umma, but cannot be used to describe the prophethood of the real Prophets that preceded Prophet Muhammad

G. A. Parwez: No Such Thing as Human Nature

Continuing from the previous post, I exposed G. A. Parwez’s denial of the human conscience. This in fact stems from his metaphysical libertarianism by which Parwez boldly asserts that humans do not possess a fitra at all:
“The truth is that there is no such thing as ‘man’s nature’ in the sense in which the word is usually used...According to the view set forth in the Qur’an, man is born neither good nor bad, but with the power and freedom to become either.” (Islam Kia Hey? p.44):

The faulty premise upon which Parwez has built his sand castle is his own false definition of fitra:
“Fitra is unalterable”
According to Parwez, since fitra is necessarily something that cannot be changed, if humans were created with a fitra it would logically necessitate that they have no free will. Of course, the truth is that fitra can indeed be corrupted and is corrupted, as the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said:
“None is born except upon this Fitra until he is able to express himself with his tongue.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Meaning, once a child is able to express himself in a human language and comprehensible speech he enters a phase of life when his fitra may become quickly corrupted. The fact that humans are created upon the fitra is affirmed in the Book of Allah:

So set your face to the upright Religion. (It is) the nature (made by) Allah upon which He has created humanity
(Sura 30:30)

The plain meaning of the Ayah is that it is in man’s fitra, or innate disposition, to be upon the upright Religion, meaning the worship of Allah alone. Of course, Parwez had no other recourse except to distort the plain and clear, established meaning of the Ayah in order to add another crutch to his woefully un-Qur’anic conception of the human condition. It is noteworthy that this Ayah is not speaking about inherent human physical limitations in which he is similar to animals, but the fact that mankind is created upon the innate disposition to direct their faces to the upright Religion, i.e., the worship of Allah alone which is the ultimate goodness. Parwez correctly refutes the Christian metaphysical doctrine of original sin, which necessitates an innate evil nature for every human, but errs severely when he denies the fact that humans are created with a good nature:

“Concerning ‘human’ nature, a certain group said, because of this wrong idea, that evil is part of man’s nature. This doctrine that every human child is born in sin is a creation of this wrong idea. On the other side, the opposing group’s view is that man is naturally good. Both of these ideas are false. Man is neither naturally good nor bad.”
To deny man’s innate goodness is clearly a position that contravenes the teachings of the holy Qur’an. Those who hold such a debased view of the human condition must be asked why Allah Most High ordered even the Angels to prostrate before Adam, and why Iblis “fell from grace” on account of his refusal to acknowledge the superiority of man.

G.A. Parwez: Humans Don't Possess a Conscience

Allah Most High says:
And the soul and (He) Who fashioned it. Then He inspired it (to distinguish) its wickedness and its righteousness
(Sura 91:7-8)

The plain meaning of this Qur’anic passage is that Allah Most High has created the soul and inspired within it its conscience through which it is able to make a basic distinction between good and evil. Hence this is the true and orthodox Islamic philosophy regarding the human condition, i.e., that the human is granted by his Maker an innate knowledge of good and evil.
But the wayward Ghulam Ahmad Parwez, who re-interpreted the Qur’an to be in accordance with his modernist, materialist and naturalist thoughts, not only denied the orthodox Islamic conception of the human condition derived from this Ayah (91:8), he had the audacity to grossly distort its meaning. According to Parwez:
“The view that the power to discrimate between right and wrong is inherent in man finds no support in the Qur’an. The verse (91:8) which is very often quoted in this connection has been misunderstood. It does not refer to any such discriminating quality of ‘human nature’. For if man possessed the capability of judging good from the bad, and thus distinguishing between the right and wrong without the help of Divine guidance, the institution of nubuwwah would lose its significance. Why then should God have raised Anbiya from among men and entrusted to them the task of directing His people on the right path? Again, if the power to distinguish between right and wrong were inherent in the nature of man the whole of mankind, from its beginning to this day, would have been following one and the same moral code; but, as already stated, there are no universally accepted moral standards. Each group has its own ethical code, and what is more, this code has also changed with the passage of time. The verse cited above does not, therefore, mean that ‘human nature’ - or man’s conscience - is qualified to know of its own right from wrong, or has within it the power to discriminate between Khair and sharr. The words in the verse referred to above, (i.e. 91:8) on the contrary are the statement of a fact, the fact of man’s potentialities for becoming good or bad, as he decides for himself. Since the human personality (or self) is given in an undeveloped form, there are, the verse says, equal possibilities of his attaining the highest good, or wasting himself in wrong doing. The correct translation of the verse is: ‘Human self has been endowed with the capability of both integrating itself or corrupting it.’” (Islam Kia Hey? p.42):

The objections and arguments put forward by G. A. Parwez are, quite frankly, obnoxious. Firstly, he argues that the standard translation of the Ayah (91:8), which is based on the plain meaning of the Arabic text, is incorrect. Yet Parwez’s alternative translation is based entirely on his preconceived materialist and naturalist notions. He has simply forced a meaning on to the Verse which is plainly not present. He apparently wasn’t bothered with such blatant intellectual dishonesty. Nor has Parwez articulated any linguistic argument in support of why he thinks the standard translation and understanding of the Ayah is incorrect and that his alternative translation is truly faithful to the text. If anything, Parwez’s justification for revising the translation of the Ayah is a textbook case of gross circular reasoning.
Parwez’s first rational argument against the orthodox conception based on this Ayah is that if the human soul has been inspired by Allah with a capacity to discriminate between good and evil then the entire institution of Nubuwwa (prophethood) is redundant. It is acknowledged that Allah raises up Prophets and Apostles for the purpose of guiding the people to the right path, but this does not negate the idea that the human soul has an innate sense of right and wrong. Prophets and Apostles are sent to remind people that they must follow their instinctive goodness and shun all forms of wickedness. Furthermore, Prophets and Apostles may bring a detailed divine law based on a divinely revealed Scripture, which contains a detailed ethical code, or to revive the neglected and distorted detailed moral laws of their preceding law-bearing Apostle. The human soul is only inspired to have a very basic ability to discriminate between right and wrong. For example, every human soul must necessarily know that murder is wrong, while expending effort to save a life is good. Orthodox Islam teaches that it is from the human fitra or “innate disposition” to believe in and worship the One God. The Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وسلامه عليه said:

“No child is born except upon the Fitra (innate disposition to worship Allah alone). Then his parents make him into a Jew, or make him into a Christian or make him into a Magian.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

Apart from guiding their people to the right path, the function of Prophets and Apostles is to teach their people the proper way to worship their Lord and Maker, knowledge which is not part of the inspiration Allah gives to each human soul regarding basic morality.
Parwez’s second, though perhaps equally absurd, objection is that if the human soul has been inspired as to what is right and wrong, why are there such differing ethical codes and moral standards among the different human civilizations, and why do those ethics and morals evolve and change over time? Although not reflected in the English translation (Islam: A Challenge to Religion) of Parwez’s book, Islam Kia Hey? written in Urdu, the latter contains such a ridiculous example which is perhaps why it was not included in the English translation:
“The human child’s thoughts and beliefs depend on the environment in which he is brought up and raised in. Jain children are extremely contemptuous of meat, but a Muslim child delightfully devours meat.”
As has already preceded, the Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وسلامه عليه explained that while every child is born with an innate disposition to discriminate between right and wrong, that disposition is corrupted by his parents, and by extention, the broader environment and society in which he is raised. However, the absurd example of eating or refraining from meat has nothing to do with basic human morality. It is more a matter of taste informed by one’s culture and household custom. The inspired morality of the human soul informs him about very basic matters of conduct, such as that murder, aggressive violence, theft, rape and false testimony are wrong. These are in fact universally recognized morals common to literally every human civilization and society.

Abul Kalam Azad: Gog & Magog are Mongols, Tatars, Scythians

In the previous entry, I quoted al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir’s view that Ya’juj wa Ma’juj are the Turks and Mongols. Here I shall present the researched conclusions of the Indian Muslim scholar, Abul-Kalam Azad (1888-1958). He writes that Gog and Magog are those wild but powerful nomadic tribes whose raids motivated the Chinese to construct the Great Wall (Ashabi Kahf aur Ya’juj Ma’juj p.95):

Azad goes on to explain that in Asia one of their branches are known as the Tartars, and whom the Greeks knew as the Scythians. Furthermore, the Mongols must be identified with Magog. He writes that the Chinese refered to the Mongols as “Mog”, which is similar to Magog (ibid p.96):

Ibn Kathir: Gog & Magog are Turks, Mongols

Continuing from the previous entry, we now come to the identity of Gog and Magog. It has been my contention that Gog and Magog are Altaic, or Turkic and Mongolic, nations that came out from the steppes of Central Asia, spread throughout the Earth causing corruption. For instance, Ibn Kathir رحمه الله writes:
“So Yagog and Magog are a group from the Turks, and they are the Mughal, Mongols.”
(al-Bidaya wan-Nihaya v.2 p.110):

Reality of Gog and Magog

Regarding the great number of Gog and Magog, and the fact that it is a massive confederation of nations, Hudhaifa b. al-Yaman رضى الله عنهما narrates that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said:

“Yagog is a nation and Magog is a nation. Each nation consists of four hundred thousand nations.”
(Mu’jam al-Awsat lit-Tabarani)

This certainly fits with the idea that Gog and Magog are the vast majority of mankind - the children of Adam, as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said according to the narration of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri رضى الله عنه:
“From Yagog and Magog nine hundred and ninety nine, and from you, one.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

The Book of Ezekiel describes them as “a great company” (Ezekiel 38:4), having עַמִּים רַבִּים “many people” with them (Ezekiel 38:6, 9, 15, 22), “coming like a storm and covering the land like a cloud, coming out from their place in the far north”. The oracle of the 38th chapter of Ezekiel states that God Himself shall send Gog of Magog against the land of Israel, but that He shall destroy them along with the many people with them through a pestilence (Ezekiel 38:22). In the 39th chapter, it is said that Gog shall perish upon the mountains of Israel, after having come down upon it from the far north. Their carcasses shall be fed upon by birds and by beasts of the field (Ezekiel 39:4). “Then the inhabitants of the cities of Israel will go out and make fires and feed them with the weapons - shields and bucklers, bows and arrows, clubs and spears; they shall use them as fuel for seven years. They will not gather firewood in the fields or cut any in the forests, but will use the weapons as fuel for their fires” (Ezekiel 39:9-10). Confirming the massive number of Gog and Magog, the Christian Book of Revelation states: “And (Satan) shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them” (Revelation 20:8-9). According to the Book of Ezekiel, it is Magog and those that dwell in the “coastlands” which shall be destroyed by a fire sent by God (Ezekiel 39:6). Ezekiel 39 also states that their dead corpses shall be food for all sorts of beasts and birds: “Speak unto the birds of every sort, and to every beast of the field: Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to My feast that I do prepare for you, even a great feast, upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh and drink blood. The flesh of the mighty shall ye eat, and the blood of the princes of the earth shall ye drink; rams, lambs, and goats, bullocks, fatlings of Bashan are they all of them. And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of My feast which I have prepared for you. And ye shall be filled at My table with horses and horsemen, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.” (Ezekiel 39:17-21)
The Qur’an and Hadith more or less confirm this prophecy. It is Allah Himself who shall send the hordes of Gog and Magog:
“Allah shall send Yagog and Magog, and they come down from every slope.”
(Sahih Muslim)
They shall come up against and invade the Holy Land, called “the land of Israel” in Ezekiel and “camp of the saints” and “beloved city” in the Christian Book of Revelation, drinking up all the water that remains in Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) and firing arrows into the sky once they reach a certain mountain in the Holy Land:

“The first of them pass by the Lake of Tiberias, drinking what is in it. Then the last of them pass by it saying: ‘There was water here at one time.’ They travel until they reach a mountain at Bait al-Maqdis. They will say: ‘We have killed whoever was in the Earth. Come! Let us kill whoever is in the skies.’ They will shoot their arrows into the Heavens, so Allah will return their arrows to them red with blood.”
(Jami at-Tirmidhi #2240)
“Gog and Magog would walk until they would reach the mountain of al-Khamar and it is a mountain of Bait-ul-Maqdis and they would say: ‘We have killed those who are upon the earth. Let us now kill those who are In the sky’ and they would throw their arrows towards the sky and the arrows would return to them besmeared with blood.”
(Sahih Muslim)

These arrows which Gog and Magog shall fire into the sky, inflicting casualties, are perhaps better understood to be modern day anti-aircraft missiles or other advanced weapons.
Gog and Magog shall be destroyed by a pestilence:
“Allah shall send against them a bug in their necks so in the morning they will perish like the death of a single person.”
(ibid)

“Allah will send a worm like a bug that will penetrate their necks. So they will die like the death of locusts, one on top of another.”
(Sunan Ibn Maja #4079)

Their carcasses shall be eaten by the beasts of the field:
“Then the people will come out and let their flocks loose, but they will not have anything to graze on except their flesh, and they will become very fat as if they were grazing on the best vegetation they ever found”
(ibid)

“By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! Verily, the beasts of the Earth shall become fat from their meat.”
(Jami al-Tirmidhi #3153)

And as stated in Ezekiel 39:9-10, the Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وسلامه عليه said similarly:
“The Muslims will use the bows, arrows and shields of Yagog and Magog as firewood for seven years.”
(Sunan Ibn Maja #4076)

These prophecies inform us that Gog and Magog shall come up against the Holy Land in such a large number, consisting of many nations within them or with them, that after Allah decimates them with a pestilence, they shall all immediately die “like locusts, one upon another”. But due to their sheer number, they shall have polluted the Holy Land with their corpses. The Hadith states:

“Then the Prophet of Allah, Jesus, and his companions will come down to the land and will not find in the land the space of a hand span except that it is filled with their putrefied corpses and stench.”
(Sahih Muslim)
“The Prophet of Allah, Jesus, shall come down with his companions, but they will not find even the space of a hand span except that it is full of their stench and blood.”
(Sunan Ibn Maja)

According to Ezekiel 39, it shall take the people of the land seven months to bury them and cleanse the land of them. According to the Hadith, purification of the Holy Land shall be like this:
“Allah shall send birds with necks like those of Bactrian camels and would carry them and deposit them where Allah wishes. Then Allah will send a rain which no clay house or tent of camel hair could keep out to wash the land until it is like a mirror.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Whether these are literally birds or a description of some thing that flies, able to carry and deposit cargo, resembling the neck of Bactrian camels, remains to be seen.
So we see the following points mentioned in the Bible confirmed by Islamic prophecy regarding Gog and Magog:
1. They are great in number, having many nations with them
2. They shall come up against and invade the Holy Land
3. They are sent by God Himself
4. They shall be destroyed by a pestilence
5. Their corpses shall cover and pollute the land
6. The beasts of the field shall eat their flesh in a great feast
7. Their weapons shall be burnt for fuel for seven years
8. The land shall be cleansed of their corpses
