The
spiritual mentor of the Deobandis, Hajji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki
(1817-1899) said concerning the 'Aarif (one who is cognizant):
ظاہر
میں بندہ اور باطن میں خدا ہوجاتا ہے
Translation:
“He is a slave outwardly, but he becomes God inwardly.”
