Ma'mur Min Allah from the Ummah

بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ
والصلاة والسلام على خاتم النبيين
Prophet Muhammad صلوات الله وعليه التسليمات reportedly said:

رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى خُلَفَائِي ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالُوا : وَمَنْ خُلَفَاؤُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : الَّذِينَ يُحْيُونَ سُنَّتِي وَيُعَلِّمُونَهَا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ

Mercy of Allah upon my successors” three times. They said: “And who are your successor, O Apostle of God?” He said: “Those who revive my Sunnah and teach it to the servants of Allah”

So the basic description of the Prophet’s esoteric successors is that they are individuals who revive his Sunnah and teach it to the people.

Orthodox Sunni Islam has a rich history of Awliya Allah رضوان الله عليهم men (and women) of extreme piety and devotion to Allah through whom He illuminated the Earth. These eminent individuals came in their thousands, nay tens and hundreds of thousands, and they all belonged to the Sunni tradition, not the Shi’ite, Mu’tazilite or Kharijite traditions. Many texts have been written detailing the lives and acts of these individuals, such as the Tadkirat al-Awliya literature. We regard them as true, esoteric successors of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
These individuals were usually blessed with frequent Ilham (inspiration) and Kashf (revelation). Allah demonstrated Karamat (miracles) at their blessed hands. They often beheld true visions of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Sometimes, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would commission them for a special task through such true visions.

Abu Zakariya Yahya bin Mu’adh al-Razi (830-871 CE) رحمة الله عليه was one such Saint of this Ummah who beheld the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a vision:

آپ نےجمعہ کی شب میں حضور اکرم ص کو خواب میں دیکھا کہ آپ فرما رہے ہیں کہ اے یحي رنجیدہ نہ ہوکیوں کہ تیرا غم مجھ کو غمکین کر دیتا ہے۔ اب تیرے لۓ یہ حکم ہے کہ ہر شہر میں جاکر وعظ کہہ
چنانچہ سب سےپہلے نیشاپور پہنچ کر آپ نے وعظ میں فرمایا کہ اے لوگو میں خدا کے نبی ص کے حکم سے شہر در شہر وعظ گوئی کے لۓ نکلا ہوں

On the night of Jumu’ah, he saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a dream, saying: “Hey Yahya! Don’t be anxious, because your sorrow makes me sorrowful. Now you are ordered to go to every town and preach.” So he first arrived at Nishapur and began preaching “People! By the command of God’s Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم I am going from town to town preaching” (Tadkirat al-Awliya pp.193-194)

This condition is what we describe as someone being مأمور من الله or divinely-commissioned by Allah for some special task and purpose. The quality of being ma’mur min Allah is therefore not the exclusive domain of the Prophets and Apostles of God. If someone from the Ummah claims he has been chosen by Allah for some special commission, his claim may be rejected if that task clearly contravenes the divine Shari’ah, or involves introducing something new into the Religion – bid’ah.

  1. The Prophetﷺ is dead. He cannot go into peoples dreams and tell them what to do. If you say that Allah caused him to do it, then this is therefore a command by Allah, which is a prophesy. And someone who receives a prophesy is a prophet, and there are no prophet or prophesies after Muhammadﷺ.

    1. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم is deceased, but it is possible to interact with him in a dream, because dreams aren't part of this world. In sleep, a person's soul is taken by Allah to another dimension.
      Secondly, a divine commission by Allah does not necessitate Nubuwwah. For example, Allah gave a divine commission to sayyidatuna Umm Musa سلام الله عليها to put her son Moses in the basket and place it in the Nile River, yet she was not a Prophetess. Likewise, Allah commissioned Talut (Saul) king of Israel, and he was not a Prophet.

  2. Where is your evidence that it is possible to interact with him? Just because your soul is taken away does not mean it can roam freely meeting dead people.

      مَنْ رَآنِي فِي الْمَنَامِ فَقَدْ رَآنِي، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لاَ يَتَخَيَّلُ بِي، وَرُؤْيَا الْمُؤْمِنِ جُزْءٌ مِنْ سِتَّةٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ جُزْءًا مِنَ النُّبُوَّةِ
      "Whoever saw me in a dream has really seen me, for Satan cannot imitate me (my form). And the vision of a Believer is a part from the forty-six parts of Nubuwwah"

    2. I know about that hadith. Just because you saw his likeness and appearance does not mean his consciousness is somehow transported. You should really not incorporate Hindu mushrik beliefs in Islam.

    3. There is no resemblance with Hinduism. This is a purely Islamic belief that when you see the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a dream, in his original form, then you are really seeing and interacting with him. This is the established belief of Ahlus Sunnati wal-Jama’ah.

    4. The hadith says that his APPEARANCE is real, and nothing more. Therefore if one see him in a dream, then his FORM is only true. This does not mean that he actually transpired in your dream, nor does it mean that if you interact with him it means you are actually interacting with the real Prophet (PBUH). You have transposed pagan mushrik ideas of necromancy and communicating with the dead into Islam, murtad.

    5. The Prophet would not say "me" if he only meant a form that doesn't have his consciousness in it. This is not necromancy. In necromancy, spirits of the dead are conjured through incantations in this world. But in a dream, it is by Allah's Will that He chooses to show the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to the dreamer, who sees him in another dimension, not in this world.

    6. I will in sha Allah quote narrations from the Sahabah رضى الله عنهم where they described their interaction with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم after he died through dreams and visions. According to you, were they engaged in necromancy معاذ الله ??

    7. You are deflecting and not addressing my main point which is: the Prophet(PBUH) only mentioned his APPEARANCE in the hadith being real. He gave no evidence that if you interact with the APPEARANCE, the person you interact with is really the Prophet (PBUH)

      Furthermore, you are accusing me of slandering the Sahaba when it is you yourself that do it. By necromancy, I meant the concept of communicating with the dead, which is found in many African pagan religions and cults. Communicating with the dead has absolutely no authentic basis or evidence in Islam, and not even in Christianity and Judaism unless you are a prophet. You are accusing me of slandering the Sahaba that they practiced witchcraft and sihr.

    8. Quote the Hadith, because I've already quoted it. No mention of appearance, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم literally said مَنْ رَآنِي فِي الْمَنَامِ فَقَدْ رَآنِي
      If you think seeing someone deceased in a dream is necromancy there's nothing I can do for such ignorance.

    9. It seems that you are very adamant on misrepresenting my views and the views of every scholar to justify your kufr, murtad.

      For the first point, the Prophet(PBUH) clearly states:رَآنِي meaning SEEN. I never said that simply seeing the Prophet(PBUH), or any other person is impossible or disallowed in Islam. That would be ridiculous.

      What you have innovated in the religion is, and I quote you:

      "then you are really seeing and INTERACTING with him."

      Although the hadith mentions that you are actually SEEING him, it never mention that if you interact, you are actually INTERACTING with him.

      You then again slander me like you did the Sahaba where you claim that I claimed that seeing dead people in dreams is necromancy. I only claimed that INTERACTING and COMMUNICATING with dead people, and the notion that you are acutally interacting with their true conciousness, is necromancy in the following former replies of mine:

    10. So when sayyidina Ibn Abbas رضى الله عنهما saw in a dream the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم informing him that his beloved grandson Imam Husain رضى الله عنه had just been martyred, was he speaking to a phantom or actually interacting with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم?
      أَخْبَرَنَا عَمَّارٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ بِنِصْفِ النَّهَارِ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ أَشْعَثَ أَغْبَرَ ، بِيَدِهِ قَارُورَةٌ فِيهَا دَمٌ ، فَقُلْتُ : بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالَ : هَذَا دَمُ الْحُسَيْنِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ ، لَمْ أَزَلْ أَلْتَقِطُهُ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ فَأَحْصَيْنَا ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ فَوَجَدُوهُ قُتِلَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ
      Ammar said that Ibn Abbas said: ‘One afternoon I dreamt of Holy Prophet (s) standing with his hair disturbed and with dust tangled in them and he was holding a phial filled with blood. I said to the Prophet: “O Allah’s messenger. What are you holding?” The Prophet (s) replied: “This is the blood of Hussain and his companions that I have been collecting all the day long.”
      Ammar said: ‘I remembered that day, I came to know that it was the same day which he (Hussain) was killed’.

    11. Ibn Bāz (rahimahullah) said: “As for the meeting of the souls of the dead with the souls of the living in one’s dreams, then I know of nothing that is authentically reported in this matter. However, Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullāh) mentioned that this is something that does take place―it is possible for the souls to meet each other. People have narrated plentifully regarding meeting the souls of those who have passed away in their dreams―which proves that these occurrences exist, and Allah is all-capable over everything. So the affair of the soul is strange, extraordinary and exceptional. And it is possible that while the soul is in Jannah, it is still able to meet with other souls (in this world in dreams).

    12. تلاقي روح الميت مع النائم، هذا لا أعلم فيه شيئاً صحيحاً، ولكن ذكر ابن القيم وغيره أن هذا واقع، وأنه قد تتلاقى الأرواح، والناس يقولون أشياء كثيرة من هذا من التلاقي الدال على أنه موجود، والله جل وعلا على كل شيء قدير ، فإن أمر الروح أمر غريب أمر خاص، ففي الإمكان كونها في الجنة وكونها تتلاقى مع أرواح أخرى

  3. The inspiration of Umm Musa is different because her Divine comission was vindicated by Allah's words the Qur'an. It is impossible for anyone now to truly know if Allah has ordered him to do or not do anything.

    And Allah did not directly speak to her, He only INSPIRED her to do it. She probably did not even know if Allah ordered her to do it. This is different from a false prophet who claims Allah communicates with him through revelations.

    1. The Quran was not revealed in the time of sayyidatuna Umm Musa سلام الله عليها so according to you it was not "vindicated" at that time?
      No wander you said "She probably did not even know if Allah ordered her to do it". This is a very problematic statement. How can a lady cast her own newborn baby into the River without definitive and decisive proof in the form of Wahi? Would any lady do so on a mere whim or something that is conjectural? Of course not!

    2. The Muslims today are of the Ummah of Muhammad(PBUH). The shari'i rule of previous times do not apply, as they have all been abrogated by the Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah. I find it funny you have to justify you Hundu mushrik beliefs by alluding to verses not even meant to be taken as the basis of Shariah, and ignoring authentic Prophetic injunctions, when the Prophet (PBUH) himself said that the only form of wahy left is good dreams that come true. Yet you reject this clear hadith to cherrypick verses from the Qur'an.

    3. Ironically you have denied the "good dreams" by claiming they aren't true either, i.e., that when someone sees the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in a vision it is not real but just an illusion!
      Secondly, the topic is not Revelation or inspiration, continuity of which is established in Quran and Sunnah, but the phenomenon of divine commissions after the Sealing of Prophesy.
      Let me give you the example of the promised Mahdi, who is divinely commissioned by Allah, and likewise, the Mujaddid who appear at the head of every century are divinely commissioned by Allah. These are proofs from our own Shari'ah.

    4. Again, the Prophet said that the form of wahy remaining is good dreams which come true, which I affirm you murtadd. This alone takes away any notion of Divine communication with a human, since Divine communication with humans is literally revelation and inspiration. Divine commission too is only from wahy, therefore there is no Divine commission anymore. Where is your evidence that Allah will directly communicate with the Mahdi through wahy you murtadd? Produce your proof if you are truthful.

    5. According to you, since there is a prophesy of barefoot bedouins building tall towers, the oil sheikhs received direct revelation from Allah to compete in building tall towers.

    6. You claim that the only form of revelation that remains is good dreams. What about the institution of Tahdith, as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that there may be Muhaddaths in this Ummah, then certainly Umar b. al-Khattab رضى الله عنه is one of them.
      Next, do you deny the reality of Angels and Holy Spirit descending on Believers and inspiring guidance into their hearts? This is a phenomenon proven by both Quran and Hadith.     7. Being inspired by angels is different from being inspire by Allah or the Prophet(PBUH). The former has no Divine significance, it is just a way to strengthen the hearts of Muslims, while the latter is wahy. Also I don't claim that the only form of revelation that remains is good dreams, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) does. Are you going against him your murtadd?

    8. Angels inspire Allah's Words and ideas into the heart of a Believer, it is a form of divine Kalam. Read Surah 42:51 where three forms of divine Kalam have been enumerated, one of them being divine Kalam through an Angel.
      The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said nothing remains of Nubuwwah except the Mubashshirat, he never said nothing remains of Wahi except good dreams. Wahi isn't an exclusive feature of Nubuwwah.
