In the Name of Allah, the Rahman, the Merciful
Blessings and Peace be upon the Seal of the Prophets
And We sent no Messenger but that he should be obeyed by the command of Allah
(Juz 5, Surah 4, Ayah 64)
In explanation of this Ayah, the false prophet and antichrist, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, wrote:
Translation: “A complete Prophet can never be an Ummati. For a person who is called a Messenger of Allah in the perfect sense to perfectly be an obedient Ummati of another Prophet is forbidden according to the texts of Quran and Hadith. Allah, glorified is His status, says: ‘And We sent no Messenger but that he should be obeyed by the command of Allah’. That is every Messenger is sent as one to be obeyed and an Imam. He is not sent to be obedient or a follower of anyone else.” (Ruhani Khaza’in, v.3, p.407; Izalah—i—Auham)
Incidentally, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad has attempted to refute here those Sunni Ulama, including Imam al-Qastallani رحمة الله عليه by name, who explained that when the Messiah Jesus descends he shall remain a Prophet while simultaneously being an Ummati of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم
The answer to Mirza’s argument is twofold:
Firstly, while the Ayah does affirm that a Messenger of Allah is only sent to be obeyed, it does not negate that he himself may possibly be under the obedience to another Prophet. The Qadianis, in their “Short Commentary” have themselves cited the example of the Prophet Aaron عليه السلام who despite being a Prophet in his own right was required to obey his younger brother the Prophet Moses عليه السلام
Hence it is mentioned that when Prophet Moses عليه السلام descended from Mount Sinai he addressed his brother Aaron:
(Moses) said: “O Aaron, what prevented you when you did see them gone astray from following me? Have you then disobeyed my command?”
(Juz 16, Surah 20, Ayat 92-93)
The implication of the Ayah is that Prophet Aaron عليه السلام despite being a Prophet was nevertheless required to follow and obey his brother the Prophet Moses عليه السلام
Secondly, Mirza himself later defied his own argument, made on the basis of the Quran, when he claimed to be an Ummati Prophet!
