O Sariyah! The Mountain! The Mountain! (Miracle of Umar al-Faruq

In the Name of Allah, the Rahman, the Merciful

Prayers of blessings and peace upon the one after whom there is no prophet

The miracles of the Prophet’s Companions and the pious Saints of this Ummah رضى الله عنهم are termed Karamat and belief in them is affirmed by the Sunni Muslims. Wayward sects that broke off from the mainstream Jama’ah of the Muslims have tended to deny the Karamat, such as the Mu’tazilites and the materialists, naturalists and modernists. Some of the Ghair Muqallidin (non-conformists) deny the miracles of the Saints, and also the phenomenon of Kashf and Ilham. The latter are divine visions and inspirations that Allah grants to pious Saints and Believers.

Sayyidina Ibn Umar رضى الله عنهما narrates that his father, sayyidina Umar al-Faruq رضى الله عنه sent an army and appointed as its commander a man called Sariyah رضى الله عنه

Once while he was on the Pulpit among the people (in Madinah) he suddenly began shouting, “O Sariyah! The mountain! O Sariyah! The mountain!”

Later on the army’s envoy arrived and asked “O Commander of the Faithful (Umar al-Faruq رضى الله عنه), we met our enemy and defeated them when suddenly a voice cried out, ‘O Sariyah! The mountain! O Sariyah! The mountain!’ So we reinforced our rear at the mountain and Allah defeated them.” It was said to Umar, that is Ibn al-Khattab رضى الله عنه “You were the one shouting that.” (Fada’il us-Sahabah; pp.269-270, #355)
