One of the “delicacies” of
certain non-Muslim cultures are frog legs. Sadly, many ignorant Muslims,
especially those in Java, Indonesia, also take part in dining upon frog legs.
This despite the fact that eating frogs is strictly forbidden in the Islamic dietary
laws. Indonesia happens to be the largest exporter of frog legs globally, being
the source of more than two-thirds of all frog legs in supermarkets worldwide.
This trade is of course absolutely unlawful according to our Shari’a.
Abd al-Rahman b. UthmanRA narrated:
A physician asked the Prophet – peace be upon
him – about putting frogs in medicine, but the Prophet – peace be upon him – forbade
him from killing them. (Sunan Abi Dawud #3871)
The fact that it is forbidden to kill frogs is
a proof that they are unlawful for consumption also. Let alone eating frog
legs, it is forbidden to use them for medicinal reasons too.
