Allying with Unbelievers Against Muslims: Story of Hatib bin Abi Balt'ah

In the Name of Allah, the Rahman, the Merciful

The fitnah of Wahhabism beginning in the 18th century CE was what opened the door for the emergence of the neo-Kharijites of our time, the likes of Al-Qaeda and Daesh (ISIL). The neo-Kharijites, like their predecessors among the Haruriyah and Azariqah, massacre the Muslims whom they wrongly judge to be guilty of apostasy due to sin or corruption. It is the madhhab of the Khawarij to declare a Muslim an apostate and an infidel on account of having committed a major sin, whereas the madhhab of the orthodox, mainstream Sunni Muslims is that the commission of a major sin does not expel someone from the circle of Islam.

Muhammad bin Abd ul-Wahhab, the eponymous founder of the Wahhabi movement, wrote a treatise called the Nawaqidh al-Islam (Nullifiers of Islam), in which he mentioned ten specific things that nullify a person’s Faith. Several of those ten nullifiers are controversial in that they are require a very nuanced explanation. But the neo-Kharijites of today have no regard for caution and scholarly nuance, as they casually make Takfir of Muslims based on their superficial understanding of what is considered a nullification of Islam. The neo-Kharijites are eerily similar to the original Khawarij is putting forward the doctrine of Hakamiyah to justify their Takfir of other Muslims who have failed to judge by Allah’s Law. The slogan of the original Khawarij was لا حكم إلا لله meaning “there is no rule except for Allah” based on the Ayah:

اِنِ الۡحُکۡمُ اِلَّا لِلّٰہِ

Surely, the judgment is for none but Allah

Mawla Ali رضى الله عنه famously commented on their slogan, saying:

كَلِمَةُ ‌حَقٍّ ‌أُرِيدَ ‌بِهَا ‌بَاطِلٌ

A word of truth, but they intend falsehood thereby (Sahih Muslim)

Today’s neo-Kharijites are notorious for arguing that all the rulers of the Muslims are apostates because they have failed to judge according to the divine Shari’ah. They have broken off from the Jama’ah of the Muslims like a sheep that strays from the flock and is snatched by a wolf. Ibn Abd al-Wahhab and his followers likewise declared many of the Muslims in Arabia apostates then raised the sword against them, spilling much blood and spreading terror in the land. According to Ibn Abd al-Wahhab, one of the nullifiers of Islam is:

مظاهرة المشركين ومعاونتهم على المسلمين والدليل قوله تعالى وَمَنْ يَتَوَلَّهُمْ مِنْكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Backing and assisting the Polytheists against the Muslims, and the evidence for this is His, Most High, Saying: “And whoever among you takes them as allies, then indeed he is one of them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people” (Surah 5 Ayah 51)

Thus, according to the Wahhabis, backing and assisting the Polytheists against the Believers is the eighth nullifier of Islam which will make any Muslim an apostate. While there is no doubt that a Muslim who allies with the Polytheists or any other disbeliever against the Muslims is committing a great evil and a major sin, it is not right to make a blanket verdict of Takfir upon such a person or group of Muslims. Hence, al-Qurtubi says:

Whoever frequently looks into the faults of Muslims, warns them about them, and informs their enemy of their news, is not a disbeliever if he does so for a worldly purpose and his belief in that is sound, as Hatib [bin Abi Balt’ah] did when he intended to do so without the intention of apostasy from the Religion (Tafsir al-Qurtubi, v.18, p.52)

The Sahabi, Hatib bin Abi Balt’ah
رضى الله عنه who was a veteran of Badr, once covertly attempted to send a letter to the pagan Quraish in Mecca informing them of some of the classified intentions of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم

Prima facie, this was espionage and treason. But Allah Most High sent down Revelation upon the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم informing him of this plot and the location of Hatib’s letter on the person of a certain lady. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم dispatched Ali, az-Zubair and al-Miqdad رضى الله عنهم to acquire the letter so that it did not fall into enemy hands. Miraculously, it was found with that exact lady who had concealed it in a braid of her hair. An incredible proof for the veracity of the Prophesy of Muhammad

Now naturally some of the Prophet’s Companions began saying that Hatib is a hypocrite, whose apostasy has become manifest. Sayyiduna Umar رضى الله عنه even asked the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم permission to execute Hatib by beheading him. But Hatib explained himself to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying that he was fearful for his relatives in Mecca and wanted to safeguard their lives by sharing classified information with the enemy, and said:

وَمَا فَعَلْتُ كُفْرًا وَلاَ ارْتِدَادًا وَلاَ رِضًا بِالْكُفْرِ بَعْدَ الإِسْلاَمِ

I did not do it out of kufr or apostasy, nor am I pleased with kufr after Islam

The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم thereupon accepted Hatib’s excuse, and excused him, saying:

لَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمْ

You have spoken the truth [O Hatib]

and

He has witnessed Badr. And what do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the People of Badr and said: “Do whatever you want, for I have forgiven you.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

And today it is a sad reality that many Muslims, individually and collectively in reference to Muslim governments and nations, are allied with the non-Muslims and even co-operate with them in wars against other Muslims. It is evident that all of this is for worldly gains and desires, and not out of rejection of Islam or an intention to leave this Religion.

Those who split up their Religion are Shi'ites (Surah 6:159)
