False Mahdi of Jaunpur: Claim of Divinity

 بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ

الصلاة والسلام عليك يا سيدي يا رسول الله

In the Name of Allah, the Rahman, the Merciful

Blessings and salutations of peace be upon you my Master, Apostle of Allah

At the beginning of the tenth century after Hijrah a false Mahdi claimant appeared named Sayyid Muhammad Jaunpuri (1443-1505). He founded a new sect which regrettably exists till this day known as the Mahdawis. No different than the other false Mahdi claimants and their followers, the so-called Mahdawis and followers of Muhammad Jaunpuri separated from the Jama’ah or main body of the Muslims, namely, Ahl us-Sunnah. Had the Jaunpuri pretender restricted himself to a mere claim of being the Mahdi he would not have been such a controversial figure. But as is common with such pretenders ensnared by the Devil and working to loot the faith of the people, they inevitably assault the very foundation of Faith - the Oneness of God. Hence, in the books published by the Mahdawis themselves it is mentioned that Muhammad Jaunpuri claimed to be God Himself and said:

انا الله رب العالمين

I am Allah, Lord of the worlds (Panj Faza’il, p.95)

He also said:

جس نے مجھے دیکھا اس نے خدا کو دیکھا

Whoever has seen me has seen God (Sharh Aqidah, p.177)

  1. Mahdawi apologists argue that the Hadith:
    مَنْ رَآنِي فَقَدْ رَأَى الْحَقَّ
Whoever sees me has surely seen the Truth (Sahih al-Bukhari) proves that one who has seen the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم has in fact seen Allah Who is Al-Haq (the Truth). But the correct meaning of the Hadith is that whoever sees the Prophet, meaning in a dream, then he has seen him in reality, as explained by Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani in Fath al-Bari
    أَيِ الْمَنَامَ الْحَقَّ أَيِ الصِّدْقَ

    1. It is utter disgrace and extremely disrespectful to use words like Devil here(Astagfirullah). This haqeer can understand that it's a utter shock for the people without the knowledge of Tariqat/Vilayat to understand this but still completely unacceptable. Scholars have explained that when a person is at war with Allah, that person will die in the state of kufr unless he/she sincerely repents and seeks forgiveness, by using these words without any understanding you are in that category now since Allah has mentioned in Hadith Qudsi Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 6502) whoever ... they are at war with me.
This haqeer will attempt to explain it but the knowledge of vilayat can't be understood just like that, it’s only with Allah’s ahsaan/fazal or Khatimein Ale Salaam(Seal of Prophethood, Seal of Sainthood of Muhammad sallelahuwasallam I.e Mahdi Ale Salaam) faiz (gift) or Saints faiz(gift) that one can understand, regular people won't be able to digest it.
Below famous Hadith is narrated by Abu Hurairah (RaziAllahTalaAnhu), Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 120), under the Book of Knowledge (Kitab al-`Ilm)
"I have memorized from Allah's Messenger (SallelahuWaSallam) two vessels of knowledge. I have propagated one of them to you, and if I propagated the second, then this pharynx (throat) would be cut."
      Imaam Zainul Abideen's RahmatullahAle's saying
"I hide the jewels of my knowledge, so that an ignorant person does not see the truth and fall into tribulation.O Lord, if I were to disclose a single pearl of this knowledge, they would surely say to me: 'You are an idol worshipper!'And Muslim men would deem my blood permissible to shed, viewing the ugliest deed they could commit [murdering me] as something virtuous."
The above conversation falls in this category of second vessel of knowledge(vilayat/batin knowledge) for which Abu Huraira RaziAllahTalaAnhu and Imam Zainul Abideen Rahtmatullah Ale are saying people will kill them for preaching it, meaning that normal person just can't accept it as it's against everything they have learned about the Islam, all their life right from childhood.

    2. Sayyidina Abu Huraira radi Allahu anhu was referring to some of the knowledge and signs of the evil rulers, particularly the Umayyad. He sought refuge from the rulership of young men of Quraysh. This is what the classical Ulama and Muhaddithin have explained. For instance, he prayed to Allah to grant him death before the seventh decade, meaning the 60s after Hijra. So he passed away in 59 Hijri. The next year Yazid Palid seized power and a great tribulation began. So if Sayyidina Abu Huraira spelled out everything in detail about the prophecies concerning that fitna and the evil of Umayyads they would have executed him!
The statement of Sayyidina Abu Huraira radi Allahu anhu is not a justification for your doctrine that Jaunpuri saying he is Allah is not heresy since it falls under Fana Fillah. We accept the concept of Fana Fillah. But Fana Fillah does not mean an individual who has annihilated himself in the Person of Allah can utter “I am Allah” and escape the verdict of apostasy. This is why al Hallaj was rightfully executed. This is why Sarmad Kashani was rightfully executed.
Furthermore, the claim of Jaunpuri about Fana Fillah and justifying his claim to being Allah on that basis is no different than the claim of the dajjal Mirza Qadiani. He made similar statements and used the concept of Fana Fillah to justify it. Incidentally and interestingly, the Qadianis consider your Mahdi of Jaunpur to have been the Mujaddid of the 9th century Hijri.

  2. Messenger of Allah SallelahuWaSallam is saying it was Allah who spoke to Ali RaziaAllahTalaAnhu, not him
Sunan al-Tirmidhi (Hadith 3726): "The Messenger of Allah (SallelahuWaSallam) called 'Ali on the Day (of the battle) of al-Ta'if and spoke privately with him [Najwa]. The people said, 'His private conversation with his cousin has grown lengthy.' So the Messenger of Allah (SallelahuWaSallam) said: 'I did not speak privately with him, rather Allah spoke privately with him.'"
Hadith Qudsi, Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith 6502): ".....When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks...."
The point of above references is that when one becomes fanifillah ( completely perished in the zaath/essence of Allah SubhanahuTala), Allah becomes their eyes with which they see, ears with which they hear, and sometimes it's Allah that speaks. This is how one sees Allah as well, when Allah Himself has become their eyes then can see Allah since Allah can see Himself. This is one of the highest state and we Mahdavis believe that lot of our saints also have achieved this state.
Let me summarize the conversation printed on that page.
When Mahdi Ale Salaam said that I am Allah Rabbul Alameen, Shahe Naimath RaziAllahTalaAnhu is asking “Master, are you Allah’s zaath (essence), Mahdi Ale Salaam responds “Banda, banda hi (meaning this slave is slave)”, ShahE Naimath RaziAllahTalaAnhu asks for the second time same thing, Mahdi Ale Salaam responds “This slave is slave but this slave is Allah’s zaath (Essence)” and when he asks for the third time, Mahdi Ale Salaam says “This slave is slave but Allah’s zaath”
You can see Mahdi Ale Salaam is trying to differentiate that he is slave but at the same time Allah’s zaath, this is a state of complete perishness in Allah’s zaath ( Faanifillah)

The above explanation most likely will conflict with the regular ulema’s understanding but not with Sufis. By Allah’s ahsaan and fazal o karam, what has been explained is plain truth. One can take it or ignore at their own peril, there is no compulsion in deen.

  3. It is plain kufr and shirk to say “I am Allah” or “I am the Dhat of Allah”
The concept of Fana Fillah is that a person is erased in the Person of Allah so that only Allah exists. But this concept is experiential not ontological. Hence, none of our great Sufis or Saints said “I am Allah”. But they said “I have been annihilated in Allah”. The claim to being God is heresy, and it was the claim of Pharaoh of Egypt who said
    أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَىٰ
    Sura 79:26
