In a previous entry I refuted the modernist claim that the
institution of tahdith has been terminated. Just to recap, the Prophet
Muhammad (sall Allahu alayhi wasallam) said that there were, in the
past, Muhaddathun, men with whom Allah spoke despite them technically
not having been prophets, and if there was to be one from among this Umma then certainly
Umar b. KhattabRA is among them. According to astray modernists, this
Hadith does not prove that the institution of tahdith continues within this
Umma after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (sall Allahu alayhi wasallam),
but is only meant to signify the status and excellence of sayyidina UmarRA,
who would have been a Muhaddath if that institution was not
discontinued, just as another Hadith states that he would have been a Nabi (prophet)
if Nubuwwa (prophecy) was not discontinued either. One of the answers to
this dubious argument of the modernists, who in their materialist zeal for
rejecting any kind of communion between Allah and the righteous through divine
inspiration, deny that Umar b. KhattabRA was a Muhaddath or Mukallam
(one with whom Allah is regularly conversant), is the fact that the great sahabi
Abd al-Rahman b. AwfRA, who is from among the al-‘Ashara al-Mubashara
(ten companions given glad tidings of Paradise by name), testified concerning
sayyidina UmarRA:
أشهد أنك مكلم
“I
bear witness that you are a Mukallam” (Fath al-Bari v.7 p.50):
