Abul Alaa Mawdudi had a very dim view of the Muslim Ummah. According to him, the vast majority of Muslims are ignorant about the reality of Islam (apart from him and his Jama'ati Islami of course). Regarding the Sawad al-A'zam (lit. "the great blackness") meaning the mass of the Muslims, Mawdudi says:
"The greatest weakness of the Muslim is that their Sawad-i-A'zam is not acquainted with either their national culture or peculiarities, to the extent that they cannot even distinguish between what is Islam and what isn't Islam."
